I have own a Kenmore ever since I first started sewing about 35 years ago. I've had it in for service once and that time the needle was inserted incorrectly. They cleaned and oiled it and the cost was $70. I use it for all of my piecing when quilting. I also own a Viking embroidery machine but I still use the Kenmore for everything except embroidery. You cannot go wrong with a Kenmore sewing machine.

I picked up a made in Japan Kenmore 4-stitch/free arm and vertical bobbin machine at a garage sale this summer. It was reduced from $10 to $7 by a lady who said she was not going to use it to hem pants anymore. I planned to give it away, but soon fell in love with this little baby and use it for quilt class. You can sure tell the difference in the metal machines!

Trading in my 1966 Kenmore was the biggest mistake I ever made with machines.

I have 2 kenmores 1978 and 1992 computer...wouldn't trade them...I bought them originally for the home service which was a big plus as no repair shop here. have had the computer serviced once as just a checkup and it has been purring every since...the only thing I wish it had was auto needle/down and thread cutter...my brother has this and it is a plus feature but not up/grading soon...

I think I had it back for repair at least 5 times for the tension after that before giving up and trashing the thing. <SIGH>Anyway, I'm going to get a back-up class machine and will likely go with a Janome of some kind, so it's good to know this about Kenmore. I had thought about getting an Activa as a backup, but even used, they are over $500 and I'm thinking I want a mechanical as a backup rather than another computerized machine. I can service those machines as can my sister.</SIGH>
Vintage Singers are a good back up machine, the 301 is very portable only about 17 lbs and have a handle on top, slant needle, all metal gears, virtually indestructible, and very easy to dis assemble tension discs and re assemble. Good space under the arm for quilting,I highly reccommend them and usually can be found on ebay for under $100.
