Simply put--it's stunning! I was amazed at the condition of it, as well. What a lucky guy to have such a treasure. Thanks for sharing that!

It is one of those things you would love to look upon, but I would not like to own it. It is to gorgeous to leave in a closet.

that is a lovely quilt thanks for linking it for us, Jenel.

The woman said it was made with velvet so it must have been a show piece not an everyday use quilt, right? Can't wash velvet at that time anyway. I would think the family knew to keep it put away.

I have a question, well it's just one of a million about quilting really. Fabric and thread shouldn't be stored in a plastic/rubber container?

    Thanks

I saw it and it was a young woman that made it. Shr died in her early 20's.

I sure did. The fact she is employed by Sotheby's and touched it made me think she isn't all that knowledge d/qualified; not being judgemental but even photos have gloved people handling them. Petty brave if you ask me.

A pillow case keeps out the dust and spiders and it can not sweat. I loosely lay my quilts in cases and never fold them so there is never a crease. Some I roll with archival paper on an archival roll. Say no thank you to plastic and air tight plastic containers.

there are vast differences in appraisals- if you take one of your quilts to a 'certified quilt appraiser' you will receive an (insurance appraisal) the amount the appraiser feels it should be insured for- what it would take to replace it--
it is generally far above a market value....market values fluctuate (alot) are dependant on the area (location matters) and the economy...on the antiques roadshow they (generally) give you the appraisal based on what similar items have sold for at auction recently- not necessarily what you should insure it for if you have no intension of selling it.
i have a quilt with an insurance appraisal of $3700...the market value however is a low $650!!! (which is actually less than the fabrics in the quilt) so i am not apt to sell it before the market/economy regains some momentum. but if i leave it to one of my granddaughter's with the insurance appraisal 50 years from now it may be worth closer to that...or it may only be worth $50...you just never know where the market is going to go
