When you give a quilt away.
#41
As soon as I say " what would you like?" I feel like its a job. So that's why I generally surprise people I know WOULD like a quilt. If I don't know someone well enough to know whether they would like a quilt or not, a quilt as a gift for them is too much. I'll just get something off the gift registry and we'll both be happier.

I am very selfish in my hobbies - I make exactly what I want to make, and if I think someone would like it, I give it away. I do often have people in mind, and will work on something I think they would like - but only if I like it too! I don't do requests, as pressure to get something done kind of saps the fun out of it.

I am with Shirley in AZ....I keep a book called "Angel whispers"....names get added into it via what I call angel whispers, I have no other explanation...when I hear a whisper I am drawn to fabric and colors and usually make up my own pattern, sometimes tho the inspiration comes from a pattern I see, it has never failed. I could share with you so many stories of the things people have shared with me about their quilts...I am ever amazed that God points the way with each one I do. I just got a card from a couple I made one for Christmas..it was her favorite colors...how did I know??? I don't but a higher power does...I hope I'm always listening.......

Since it is usually for people I know well the quilts are made with their likes in mind. Some are special occasions. And others are complete surprises. Am currently making one for a longtime friend who has invited us to visit in NY.

I don't ususally ask. I generally only make quilts or other items for people I know well enough to know color choice, fabric preference ( I have a friend who does not like the feel of flannel). I will ask an expectant mom if she has a nursery theme, color choice, etc, but don't necessarily tell her why I want to know. I also usually only make lap size and smaller. Quilts4charity I love your Angel whispers book idea. What a blessing you are to those around you.

I usually make lap quilts, and I usually have the recipient in mind while I'm piecing and quilting. I make them for special occasions like weddings, 50th, 60th and 70th birthdays and baby gifts. I also make 'just because' quilts form may kids and grandkids. They're 'just because' I tried a new pattern, and it decided it should got to X person in my family. And then there are the quilts I've made for my DD and DGD of fabric from clothes they not longer wear. They are my favorite scrap quilts.

I have asked and was glad I did because the person's response was: "I'm not that into quilts!" It saved me a lot of trouble and annoyance, and I'm grateful for her honesty. Save your efforts for someone who you know will appreciate your gift!

just to show what I am doing now, but when I ever get an overabundance of the dolls, I will return to my 'novice quilting efforts. I was recently gifted with 5 doll quilts, so when I gift the next 5 dolls, they will have a quilt to go with them. 4 more quilts are coming soon. Here is my doll website and I hope you enjoy it.
