Thanks in advance for all your help.

You could try http://www.urbanthreads.com/, not your normal bird and flower type of place...lol

Craftsy has a great class on machine quilting. Mind you it is flowers but a great way to learn the technique and then branch out. The gal who teaches it has a great book out as well on the technique and some patterns.

I have found searching an idea in Google-Images can come up with all kinds of stuff, ideas. Example - type in "Cats" and you'll come up with some fun ideas.

I have been to Pearl Louise's shop in Rapid City, SD and it is like stepping into blanket stitch heaven. Her shop is in an old two story house, and one room is dedicated just for snow men. Our guild is attending the Rapid City Quilt show in June, and one of my highlights will be going there. Maybe I will splurge and buy one of her kits.

I am going to do a Dresden plate in patriotic colors and the centers are going to be stars. I will print them from Clip Art off the computer or just cut stars out of fabric to make the appliques. Sometimes I buy things in the dollar store to trace and make templates from. I did a shamrock and a heart in this manner, Once you start looking you will find all kinds of applique material.
