I do have a Singer. check your manual on how to thread and wind bobbin thread. Most Sewing machine do have a tension disk on the top of the machine that is use when treading the bobbin. Adjusting the tension on your machine has no affect on this tension. yes thread does get old and will break. Better to buy new thread than keep having problems with old thread. I use thread from connecting tread and both my Singer and Brothers like it.
you should not have to hold the thread while winding the bobbin. Let the machine do the work. The machine should stop when the bobbin is full enough. Also I do not think that the thread should break when the bobbin is full.
Make sure you are using te correct bobbin size as specified in the manual. Singer has several bobbin sizes and not all work in every machine. The size of the bobbin may not make a difference when winding the bobbin but will make a difference when sewing.

I am having problems winding the bobbin. I am a beginner sewer. When I try to use the plastic bobbin, I find that the thread that I put through the middle that comes out on top of the bobbin and also the part you are supposed to "hold" when winding the bobbin breaks off when I am trying to wind the bobbin. I have had more problems trying to wind the metal bobbins. I have tried every tension number to get the bobbin to wind and am still having troubles. I have a Singer sewing machine and have read the directions over and over and over again. Can anyone here help me please. I really need help with this as I live alone and have nobody else to ask. I would appreciate any suggestions given. Thank Again. Frugalsewer.

I am wondering about the tension issue. If your bobbin winds in place do you have to have the presser foot down? If you do not, maybe raising the foot will solve your problem because that disengages the tension discs.
