White is so stark to me, I usually use white on cream.

Well, I just looked through several pieces in my stash and had a very hard time finding the name on the selvedges but did see P & B and Kona Bay. They are sorted by 'whiteness' - like you said, yellowy, creamy, really white etc and within each stack there is a lot of variation. When it's time to pick one it can take a while But that's a big part of the fun for me.

Thanks for the tip on Kona Snow. Will have to try it next project. I have several white cotton sheets, in good condition, that I have been using in my four and nine patch blocks; especially for baby and children's quilts. Works fine.

If it's scrappy and you're being frugal, I'd use a clean, used, white sheet. I just cut one up that somehow got black paint on it. I just cut around the paint...it looks great in the quilt!
