    This is a cool idea!

I have the heavy duty thread holders that I love, but have been known to leave them at home on a sew day with friends or at retreat. With that said this would be wonderful to have already made up and kept in my 'to go' basket of tools, just in case.

QuiltNan, is that a wooden cone, or plastic? Such a great idea. Might have to try that.

I just use a glazed flower pot behind my machine, and tape a paperclip to the top of my nachine as a thread guide to get the thread to line up with the tension disks. Works just fine. What ever you put it in needs to have enough weight to hold itself still. Have fun!

I agree. I have a spool holder just like the one sold at Amazon. I use it for the larger spools.

I was at a class where a student forgot her thread holder. She was so disappointed that she started to leave. Being the creative teacher, I put a safety pin at the top of the straw in her empty soda cup from a fast food place. We put the spool in the cup and ran the thread along the straw and through the safety pin at the top of the straw. it worked great!

I use the thread holder that stands behind the machine and I've never had a problem with it. It's designed for the cones of threads

How about the reverse? What if you need or want to use a spool that works better on a horizontal pin and the machine is vertical only? {Juki 2010)

My husband took a six inch piece of a 4 x 4, put a dowel in one corner. He then put an old ring from a key ring on the top of the dowel. He took a shorter piece of dowel and put it in the other corner of the 4 x 4. I painted it white, decorated it with some cute stickers. The cone sits on the shorter dowel, the thread runs up to the ring and then to my machine. It can be placed as far away, or as close, to your machine as you want. The weight of the 4 x 4 is enough to keep everything in place. He made me four of these so that I can swap out colors when needed. Sure beats the cost of the commercially sold thread stands and you get to be creative to boot. You can also put a thread net on the spool to keep it from tangling if it tends to be tightly wound.
