Having had health issues for past 2 years, we decided to get rid of all house plants. Here in SC we have all kind of plants outside. There is usually something blooming throughout the year in the yard. We decided to let the Lord be our Gardener! He does a better job anyway.

Hubby keeps the 2 acres mowed and and trimmed. We love camellias and they do beautifully here and don't need any special care. I've day lilies that also need no care except occasional feelings. Azaleas everywhere which are my least favored but hubby loves them.
I love house plants but they just became to burdensome for us.

My hubby and I are back volunteering at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens in the greenhouse on Mondays. I wasn't able to do much of anything until I had my 3rd back surgery 6 months ago for artificial disk implantation. Now I feel as if I never had a back problem. Just getting to the best, right doctor makes all the difference in our health sometimes. It did for me this time.

No, between my brown thumb and my cats who like to eat even artificial flowers it just doesn't work. I can even kill caucus!

I have a peace lily (18+ yrs. old), and a palm (not sure what kind). They have managed to survive, and both need re-potted. They seem to enjoy their perch with lots of light coming from the north.

Before I moved to Texas, I lived in an apartment and had about 30 plants. Every room had a plant. My kids loved and helped care for them. I sold a couple and gave my oldest son the ones he wanted. He still has a couple or maybe more. I bought a couple when I got down here but our home doesn't have the right lighting for the plants I had and also the positions in the rooms were off compared to the apartment. I just said the heck with it. So until we get another house, I'm not having anymore plants. DH has a very green thumb. He just sticks things in dirt and they grow. I am positive he can grow another tree from a popsicle stick or a toothpick.

Wow, I did not expect so many replies.

I guess I am lucky to have always lived in homes with big east and west facing windows. I have lots of natural light, even my long arm room in the basement gets lots of indirect bright light.

Funny, I have always had cats, but never once worried about them and house plants, yet server people here mentioned them as a concern. Not to say my cats have not played with the vining plants, but I just consider that to be pruning.

I remember years ago hearing that philodendrons were poisonous. I had a guinea pig as a child that used to eat the long air roots. Caused the guinea no harm at all, she lived to the ripe old age of 12.

The weather has turned much cooler here in the last couple days, we will have more warm days, but it is time to start to make room for the plants that have spent the summer on the deck.

To those of you who say they can't grow houseplants, you need to know that many more houseplants are killed by over-watering than under-watering. Especially the aloe and Christmas cactus. The ground needs to be dry to very dry before adding water. Aloe can live for a month or more without water. My daughter was watering her aloe babies once every two months. They didn't die, but they weren't doing any growing either. They need a little more water than that.

    Default house plants

I have a few. Try to choose ones that can take a little neglect. Diane C.

Have lots of indoor/outdoor plants. This year I have decided to "re-home" many of them as I'm getting tired of hauling them into the house. It's bad enough having to cover a lot of the outside plants when it gets cold. I have many "Apostle Iris" which will bloom indoors. Pretty orchid-like flowers. I have several big pots of orchid cactus which used to bloom. Maybe if I took care of them they would bloom again. Beautiful flowers...hand sized flowers. I have two big pots of Angel Trumpets which bloom lovely in Florida...no so much in North Carolina. I have to haul those to the basement every year. I have spider plants,Swedish Ivy, walking iris, night blooming cerus ..so many. A friend of mine wants first choice on the plants. We have two cats and a dog. Cats love to chew on plants and it's not good for them. At one time I thought I would get a greenhouse....hasn't happened yet so most of the indoor plants have to go.

I have one plant..a phyladendrom that was given to my father when he was in the hospital around 1954. My mom gave us kids a shoot off it many years ago, I think my brother and I have the only plants left.

I have an aleo plant. The plants I have that a lot of people have inside, I have outside. Spider plants. Palms, Ferns. I put them in the garage in the winter and put them out in the early spring. About March.
