So I read all the replies, let them stew in my brain and tried to picture all the options. So the tip for using the darkest fabric in the quilt really hit home with me, so I took a scrap to the quilt store and got some more intending to use it as flange binding with the black stripe. But while I was there, I found a red stripe and bought what was left on the bolt because stripes can always come in handy (stash building philosophy). I tried the solid with both the red and black stripes and found myself wishing I had bought a solid black to use with the red stripe for a flange binding but I wasn't going back to the store again and chose the red stripe with the solid red. I liked how the stripe can also read as a white so the red won't hopefully be too glaring against the pink wall.

I hand embroidered the "you are loved" balloon string.

Thank you so much for all the replies. They really taught me a lot about how to look at binding. I do wish I had a solid black for the inside of the flange binding but I'm glad it's done and I can ship it to my grand daughter.

I love it....that you are loved is prefect. You also did a good job of FMQ.

Thanks! I'm still learning how to FMQ. This is my second one. I wish I hadn't done it so densely but live and learn and I love learning.

Gray stripe on bias, or red with white dots.

You're welcome!!! You nailed it with the red stripe on the bias, with the darker red.

For me, I am glad you stuck with the red and didn't go with the solid black.
IMHO I think it would have been too heavy.
The stripe and solid red together kept a nice flow to it.
Even a bit of fun, to go with the fun of the balloon!!

The words on the balloon string are such a nice sentiment for your daughter.
I am sure she will be thrilled with your surprise for her.♥♥

Aww, that turned out perfectly! You did great going with a dark red stripe and I like the red flange, too. The bit of black embroidered is, I believe, the perfect amount of black to pull out the bit of black in the hearts. And I don't think it's too densely quilted . It'll lay flatter against the wall that way. So sweet. Your granddaughter will love it.

Just my 2 cents' worth -- I think the darker red!
