I get those calls too and I work for the police dept. "We" are not the ones making those calls, they must be scams. I tell the caller I work for the local P.D. and that I'm already a member and they still try to talk me into donations, I hang up on them!

We got another call last night, but they were selling insurance for our car that we haven't had in 2 years. We originally DID buy this policy, and when we needed it, they wouldn't pay ONE CENT for the repair work! I asked her why they have been harrassing us - that we have gotten about 20 calls from them in the last 6 months, she apologized and said we were being taken off her list-----------we won't hold our breath!

Marsye you need to start a thread with some stories of what you've told these people. I bet it would be hysterical!

I don't get many solicitor calls during dinner, but if I did, I would ask if they could hold on and then go eat my dinner. They'll get the message and hang up eventually.
When I was a kid (I won't say how many years ago), I was a prankster.
I also agree with you about Marsye starting a story thread.

Both DH and I are firefighters with different cities. When I ask them to tell me how much they donated to the Burn Foundation, or the other 4 registered public safety run charities in the area, I get "I don't know, but we do donate!" spiel. When I ask a charity for their tax exempt ID number, usually they will not call back.

I loved being told my job was strictly on a volunteer basis however, it was a good laugh for a few weeks!

I screen my calls. If I don't know # I let the answering machine pick up.

I like the bit about asking for their tax-exempt #.
Our local fire dept is also volunteer, and we contribute to their annual fund-raising - which coincidentally is right now.
