Being single,and a home owner, and a mom of a 'too' creatively minded son, I too do my own repairs etc.
My LHWS (local hardware store) man once told me that a plumbing job usually took 3 trips to the LHWS.
He was impressed when I got the repair done with 2 trips and a phone call!
My one concession is snow shoveling. I hire my "Bob the Builder" neighbour to do that with his big a** backhoe. !!

I'm marching right along with you. My son, who can fix ANYTHING, told me not to buy anything because he could make for nothing. My 4'x4' ironing board is now going to cover the entire dining room table and it will go around my sewing machine. When I asked where I was supposed cut out my patterns his reply was, You didn't tell me you wanted a cutting mat on it!!!!!! I tried to tell him, but it fell on deaf ears. He knew what he was doing... BTW, I still don't have the board, big or small :hunf:

LOL Jan. My son thinks he should be able to understand me, but he doesn't. (There's nothing left to understand with.) He doesn't get it.
Do they try to hang your little pictures/shelves with screws and the red expanders to make sure they hold? I bought and hid my own tools to do this so I don't have huge holes in the walls.

I have learned to do most of it myself. My DH is a woodworker (his hobby) and he can make the simplest thing so very difficult, so I usually do it when he's not around.

I got lucky as my hubby is really handy. We usually discuss projects in detail so he knows what it is I really want before he starts. So far, he's made a machine quilt frame, quilt ruler stands, free standing table, design wall, and cone thread stand.

On the other hand, I have my own tool chest that everybody seems to use. After years of taking crap from the men in my household for my little "girlie" hammer, a little 7-ounce one, hubby and both grown sons each got one as a stocking stuffer. Seems they always liked to use mine.

MY hubby makes them for my quilting friends he uses three-eights inch thick plywood maybe that will help. Mine is light yet sturdy , but I never take it off my ironing board. Good luck
