I prewash every piece of fabric that crosses my doorstep, even/and especially fabric given to me by others. When I wash my quilts after they've been finished I still get the crinkly look. I had a red and white dress many years ago that when washed was red and white striped. I have washed everything since. I don't like kits bc sometimes the itty bitty pieces shrink to a hand full of thread.

The shrinkage depends on the quality of the fabric. Good quilt shop fabric doen't shrink much...the cheep stuff does. I've never had a problem.

I prewash everything as I don't like the 'antique' look that you get otherwise. I use a lot of photographs in my quilts and these don't look good if the surrounding fabric shrinks.

A lot of the rules quilters lived by went the way of the dinosaur, just like scissor cutting your fabric.
Most fabrics today are of a better quality than of days past and shrinkage is minimal AND predictable.
That's why I don't prewash, and I've never had a problem.
But I do like the softer look of a quilt that has been washed after quilting, so I wash them before I start using them.

I haven't been quilting for long at all, but the washing or not issue is definitely a personal preference and every group believe in their reasons for washing or not. I don't think we'll ever get to agree on one way to do it, lol.

That being said, I have to say that although shrinkage and bleeding are good enough reasons to make me prewash, I mainly do it for sanitary reasons. Someone commented that blots come shrink-wrapped into the LQS, but that doesn't IMO mean that they don't contain chemicals from the manufacturing process, and also once the wrap is torn, and the bolt sits on the shelf, many people touch, unfold, fold, their hands may be clean, maybe dirty, who knows?I personally cannot stand the thought of spending all these hours touching unwashed fabric, but I suppose I am weird like that, because bed sheets come wrapped, but I prewash them before using them and everything else too.

The finished project may very well shrink after you have wash it but that's only one of the reasons for pre washing your fabric before using. We also want to remove the chemical residues and sizing that the dying process adds to
the fabric. Many people are allergic to these items but the thought of a baby snuggling against unwashed fabric and breathing in who knows what really scares me.

I always prewash. You don't want to find out one of your fabrics bled after washing and ruined your quilt. Also, even though I prewash I still get the puckered look I love because your batting is going to shrink a small percentage.

I wash the quilt top after I have it all pieced and I also wash the backing. I've never had a problem doing it this way.

Ha - good one, Scissor Queen!

I don't pre-wash, because I really don't want to pre-wash my batting too. I allow them all to shrink together, if they're going to. I use batt with a bit of poly and it doesn't shrink as much as the 100% cotton, which can shrink up to 5%. Plus, I like the old-fashioned look of a little bit crinkly.

Thank you, I feel the same. I wash most clothes I buy before wearing too.
