It is the feed dog drop. Darn drops the dogs. If they do not drop, it will probably take a service call to work it out. I know how to do it, BUT it can take time, patience and a little skill.

When you make a mistake or sew over your finger, you say "darn" and turn the knob. hehe

I'm kind of glad I read this thread.
When I free motion quilt, I drop the feed dogs, there's a button down by the feed dogs to do this, and then I turn the pressure on the pressure foot to 'darn' It's up by the thread, annd I never knew it had that setting until a month ago. (I've had the machine since 1989 or so)
So, am I being redudndant? Does putting the dial on the darning symbol lower the feeds dogs, and I don't have to push the button down below?

Oh, I have a Viking 630

The dial on the top releases the pressure on the presser foot. The lower one drops the feed dogs.

Bottom knob is feeddog drop- (darn) up (norm)
White button in senter of longer fingered control in the center is the needle position Left, Middle, Right
The long fingered silder knob is the stitch width
The top knob is the stich length
On many of these machines you have to reset the stitch width to 0 before making any other stich adjustments or it will not more or damage the intererior levers.
Go to Yahoo group japanese sewing machine collectors- someone may have a manual

I am almost certain that is how you lower the feed dogs.

In addition to what I listed before on the dials- to either side of the long finger knob for stitch width are two silver like buttons these most likely are to lock the stitch width in place once you set it. If you don't set it you should be able to play with the width while sewing creating your own designs.
In the center of the top button the white push button is reverse. This machine may or may not require the machine to be in motions to activate reverse.
Have fun
