Usually I have a pattern and fabric pictured in my mind(?) and then go from there.

Enjoy your retired life. You will be so busy you will not know how you were able to fit work in.

I have lots of fabric, so I try to find a pattern that goes with what I have on hand.

I tend to do both, but generally I will find a fabric that just finds itself in my basket and asks to be taken home. Other times - like the Boston Commons quilt I want to make in all batik fabrics, I look for fabric to use in the pattern. My son said he wanted an Egyptian quilt (huh), found one in Keepsake Quilting and actually ordered fabric for it. I am ashamed to say that I haven't even started the quilt yet, as I'm not sure I want to follow the pattern, so I'm stalling. Need to get going on it though, as Jen and James' second anniversary is coming up in Dec. - it would make a nice anniversary present. I'm so glad I was able to clear that question up for you. lol.

I usually start with a pattern or an idea. I have many, many pictures and sketches for things I want to do.

Mostly I know whats in my stash so I look through my books/patterns and something will grab my attention "Awe that fabric would look good here".

IF I'm lucky some times the fabric screams which pattern it wants to be but then some 'gotta have' fabrics just have to hang around til some other day for the right pattern to appear. I hardly ever buy fabric with a pre-concieved quilt in mind. OHHH- I think I just figured out WHY my stash is so big. :D

Attern the fabric. I do not tend to stash and fabric shopping is my favorite.
