I've tried spraying wet towels (forgot them for a day in the washer - haven't tried this on clothes so make sure it would not stain them first) with Febreeze then drying - worked pretty good. By the time they were washed again later the smell was gone.

You could try a presoak with baking soda and white vinegar. I find that usually removes almost any bad odor. I go heavy on both for the presoak and then lightly on both for the wash with laundy soap. A second rinse helps, too. Good Luck. :)

I would call the 800# for the manufacturer of your machine. I called Whirlpool recently when I got my new High Efficency Whirlpool front-loader to see if I could use vinegar and baking soda. The answer was yes because they are normal things that people use in washers. I couldn't say about the products you have named because I can't use them.

We developed mildew on carpeting and I called the county extension office. They recommended ammonia. Worked like a charm, now I use a cup of ammonia in my load of towels about every other wash to avoid that smell. I do have a front loader.

Walmart has an odor removing laundry detergent (liquid) in the camping/hunting dept. We used it on cloth diapers and it seemed to work really well! (and we have a front loader)

Try a solution of borax and baking soda. I sprinkle some borax and baking soda on the smelly wet clothes, let them sit for awhile then wash in a load of towels. Voila, sweet smelling dishrags.

So far, the ammonia has worked. We will find out for sure when he gets sweaty again on Tuesday! The vinegar did not work.
