I agree. I'll do that, too. In fact, one of the LQS here did the Tula Pink City Sampler as a BOM and we finished last year. I took the pattern for the lap size from the book and modified it to a king size. It came out great.

I usually start by following the pattern & then go off in my own direction. Where did you find the crayon pattern? I saw the pic you posted of the start of your quilt & think it is so cute!

I think a pattern gives me a great base to start with and then making the design to fit my perception of what I want to make . . . it's just a shell where I put my finishing touches on it
