I remember my mother washing in a wood copper in the back yard. There was a perfectly working electric one in the laundry but my father said it chewed too much power.
My brother & I loved washing day as Mum would allow us to cook toast on a long fork in the fire when she was finished. That toast always tasted better than what the toaster in the kitchen made. As kids we didn't think how much hard work washing day was for Mum.

I remember my granny using the wash board. Ringing all by hand. Poor women, but happy.

My sister makes lye soap. It's the best soap to bathe with. I love it.

Isn't that hard on your skin. Sorry, don't know much about it except my neighbour used to make it when we were kids.

Actually it's very good for the skin. I use it on my face and my body and most people think I am a lot younger than I am...Now I don't know if it's the soap or if I inherited good genes. Or it could be that people need to get glasses.

"Warshing Clothes Recipe" -- imagine having a recipe for this.
Years ago an Alabama grandmother gave a new bride the following recipe:

This is an exact copy as written and found in an old scrapbook - spelling errors and all.

WARSHING CLOTHESBuild fire in backyard to heat kettle of rain water.Set tubs so smoke wont blow in eyes if wind is pert.Shave one whole cake of lie soap in boilin water.Sort things, make 3 piles1 pile white,1 pile colored,1 pile work britches and rags.To make starch, stir flour in cool water to smooth, then thin down with boiling water.Take white things, rub dirty spots on board, scrub hard, and boil, then rub colored don't boil just wrench (rinse) and starch.Take things out of kettle with broom stick handle, then wrench, and starch.Hang old rags on fence.Spread tea towels on grass.Pore wrench water in flower bed.Scrub porch with hot soapy water.Turn tubs upside down.Go put on clean dress, smooth hair with hair combs.Brew cup of tea, sit and rock a spell and count your blessings.
when I was a kid we had an electric wringer washer but we boiled water outside in a big kettle, made starch from scratch and used lye soap---sometimes.
