I also would say and upholstery needle. I used this for just this reason holding the needle with a thread puller. The kind that looks like scissors but is a clamp. I'm a nurse and we call them Kelly's or snaps.

I googled curved quilting needles and found them on a Hancock's website. They are actually specified for tying quilts. However, by looking at the video it appears the one she is using is shaped more like a fish hook. So perhaps it is a different needle.

That is upholstery needle... for sure, I have one and it came with a few others for heavy duty fabric on a card in a packet.... I think you might be able to find it or them at Joanns in the area where the upholstery fabrics and notions are for that fabric... or possibly at an upholstery shop where they sell the fabrics just for upholstery... call around first but do say it comes on a card a group w/ the strong needles...

I have a package of curved needles you can have if you want for tying. I got 2 packs for a gift and don't need both of them. Let me know and I will drop in the mail.

I just bought a variety pack that contained two of these needles at Dollar General. I think it was less than $2.

That's exactly what it is - an upholstery needle. I have several.

Looked at jo anns today. They have straight upholstry needles up to about 8" long. With A small propane torch and some minor blacksmithing, you can get just what you want.
