For those of you who cut the fingers out of gloves etc., try putting the pull tab from a milk carton, cut to size, in the end of the finger. Glue it in with crazy glue or the like, and it makes a perfect thimble. I have also done this with a "rubber finger".

i've sewn for over 40 years and never could use a thimble. since learning to quilt, i have found i can use the leather thimble but i use it on my ring finger. don't know if that is the usual way but it's the only way i can wear it.

There is a tailor's thimble that has no top.
The very tip of your finger and your fingernail pop out the top and the thimble fits snugly on your finger.
When you use the thimble, you push from the side.
It took time to get used to it, but I've used one for years.

It will fit your finger and not feel awkward. Use an inexpensive one to try it.

There is a new thimble that you put in hot water and then put it on your finger and it molds to you. May be worth a try . I use a metal one with an open end for your fingernail and it's the only one I like.
