And to think I have been adding them to my compost when they could have had a better life!! :)

Are you my long lost sister?
That was drilled into us too ... must trim and keep it tidy.

Annnnnnnnnnnnd you never re-did a seam (widened, straightened, etc.without taking out the previous stitches. And every time I don't do that now, I can hear my Mother chanting at me from beyond!! :)
I must be a cousin! Trimming and neatening my sewing was drilled into me at an early age and Mom-infused habits are hard to break. My mom laughs at me now when I complain about how hard it is NOT to do something she taught me about sewing.
Glad to have you in the family! :)

Mine leaves about an inch also, so I clip them off when pressing the block. Probably don't really need to but I've sewed since I was a kid and they are clipped when sewing clothes so the habit has been set.

I'm sure I do...
After sewing a seam I just check it and then trim the threads.
It's just what I do....

Besides what my built in thread cutter takes off I do not trim any more.

Hi!
I cut all my threads, as I was taught that that is what to do, and I personally find it tidier and much nicer to work with.

My machine also auto cuts, I trim them shorter as I square up my blocks. That way everything is neet and tidy. :-)

You've got another sister you didn't know about. I have been an apparel sewer all my life; made wedding gowns, etc. Would never dream of finishing without clipping all threads. I always seem to manage a few I find before I sandwich. I also used to do cross stitch and needlepoint and you need the back looking as good as the front. Old habits die hard, as the say.
Well I guess we were "raised right"!!!

Same here. Always have done it that way. Was raised sewing and it's just the way I learned

Trim them off as I go.

Then before final pressing and quilting, I cover every inch of front and back, and trim off all the extra threads as well as any frayed edges.

As I do the final pressing, I watch and trim any that avoided me in the other passes![/quote]

I trim off threads as I go, mostly out of habit but it also seems like a good idea to keep them out of the way so they don't go poking out of seams or something when you don't want them to. Like so much in quilting, I think it's a matter of personal preference.
