Help!! First Landscape Quilt
#1
This is my first landscape quilt. It's the view from my cousins house in Chile. I have most of the picture figured out but was wondering about the snow capped volcano's upper portion. It will be off white but should I use separate fabric for the shading? Was thinking of thread painting but I have never attempted that technique. Any advice about anything in the photo would be a help. I am using batiks.

I've never done it, but I've seen some really nice crayon 'painting' that looks very realistic that might work for the snow. Search here for it; some of the examples I've seen are here on the board. Just an idea. I like landscape quilts, too, and look forward to seeing yours. I haven't been adventurous enough to try it myself.

if you are using batiks. there are a couple of hoffman watercolor 1895 series that will work for the snow capped mt..
then some thread play to highlight the darker areas would be easier....GREAT one for a beginner..not too much contrast, and REAL nature colors!
have you ever seen the works of the quilted lizard?
here is her landscape gallery page...

When I do shading in small pieces like that I use colored pencils. You can also use ink, fabric markers, crayons or paint. You don't have to use all fabric, just make it a mixed media quilt. They are fun to do.
