I have just acquired the Janome Horizon - computer boards and all. My question - aside from using a surge protector - do you use any other precautions for your machines? Would you continue to sew through a thunderstorm? Just wondering.

I don't use any electronic equipment or anything connected to plumbing during a storm. Surge protectors are not 100% reliable. Unplug your machine.

Congrats on your new Horizon. I love mine! As for precautions I take (other than the surge protector), I unplug my machine during lightening storms. Do not use magnets near your machine. I was also told not to use canned air to clean out my machine (it is hard on the computer). As for any other things to do, just keep her clean of dust bunnies, use caution and gently clean as the auto thread cutter and other parts can get messed up. Go to classes and learn all you can about using your machine. Enjoy! They really are a wonderful machine.

I have all computerized machines. I am not paranoid about storms and have no surge protectors and don't unplug. I always go on as normal during a storm. I remember as a child our house having lightening come in from an open porch door, go around the baseboard, and out the other porch door. My DGM was screaming and DGD and I thought it was neat. I really would not rely on a surge protector. I have heard they fail often. We have a gadget before our electrical box that is suppose to stop surges of power and it seems to work. It was installed by our electric company.

I am one of those crazies that likes to watch storms.

I am not paranoid about storms but know we do get surges and outages occasionally. I unplug my 830LE every night when done with her. Never worried about it with other computerized machines before, but they suggested this in class and I thought it just made good sense.

My machine came with instructions to unplug after use so that is what I do.
