I just recently joined Craftsy.com and signed up to get their newsletters. Recently they have been talking about Project Linus, which I think is a great organization. However, the latest newsletter I received referred to the quilts that are donated to Project Linus as "blankets". This really bothers me. I did e-mail their editor Hannah and and requested that she stop doing this. I explained to her that it is difficult enough for quilters to earn the respect of non-quilters due to the influx of foreign made quilts sold in retail stores, but when a major online craft organization also refers to them as blankets it makes it that much harder. How you all feel about this?

Yes! It bothers me when people think I make blankets. I immediately stop and give them an explaintion of what a quilt is- 3 layers consisting of a backing, batting, and the top! But then all of you reading this already knew that. Let's just go out and tell the rest of the world.

Is every covering donated to PL a quilt?
Suppose someone crochets an afgan?
Or cuts up some fleece with some fringe?

Technically - not quilts.

But I'm sure very warmly received by any charitable organization looking to provide coverings/blankets/snuggies/quilts for children.

Seems sort of petty to complain about quilters not getting the "appropriate" recognition when it should be about the kids.

There are plenty of other venues where it would be more worthwhile to point out the distinction between quilts and blankets.

Does Project Linus also accept coverings that are knitted or crocheted? I just checked - they do.

It makes sense that all coverings be referred to as "blankets" -

"Blanket"- in my mind - is something that can be warm and comforting.

So - no, in the context of Project Linus, it does not bother me that a quilt is referred to as a blanket.

I have rarely heard a child call a quilt a quilt. It is generally a blanket. Beside, Linus carried a blanket, not a quilt.

A quilt can be a blanket, and a blanket can be a quilt.

No problems here.
