Thrift stores are a goldmine (large men's shirts, ladies dresses, and bags of fabric and fabric scraps, etc. Online shops always have good sales. Hit "search" at the top of this page and type in online fabric stores. Walmart is bringing fabric back, Watch Joann's for sales (50% off are the best)

I like going to Hancock's. JoAnn's by me closed, so I don't make it there a whole lot. Right now, my Hancock's is clearing out some fabrics, that are all cotton for 1.95 - 3.95 per yard, and sometimes I will find pieces there that I like.

My problem is not always knowing how much to get. I found a beautiful piece with hummingbirds, and did not get as much as I wished I had, and went back a few days later and could not find it.

Now, when I go, I usually pick up more than what I think I need, especially if I like it.

All of the answers above are good. I find fabrics at yard sales and thrift stores. I got a great deal recently on pre-cut squares at my local SPCA store.

I check yard sales and second hand stores. Its a good way to start. Alos I have friends who sew but do not quilt. Ask them if they would donate scraps left over. Many are real glad to find someone to take them People will also give batting this way. So talk to all your sewing friends and family. I used some of my dh shirts to make practice blocks. Best of luck.

Well if there is a garment factory nearby check with them for scraps. I found a nice lot of fabric at an auction.

Craigslist - I watch it for quilters or quilters families that sell their stash.
