I don't think I have ever followed a pattern exactly. My piecing/quilting is like a box of chocolates.. you just never know what your going to get.

I have to have a pattern to go by, no way I can look at something and try to do (I do envy people that can do that). Sometimes mine looks like the pattern and sometimes it don't. LOL

I piece according to the scraps that I grab out of the bag. The fabric tells me what to do. No big decisions to make. Peaceful piecing... Hugs

I tend to use patterns as a guide, as the only time I followed a pattern to the letter it turned out to be a disaster. Sometimes I make up my own patterns and that is a lot of fun. I keep it simple and stress free. (Quilt making should be fun.)

I think it is wonderful to have so many approaches - keeps the activity dynamic and interesting. I've taken all of those approaches at some time but now it's "See what happens if I do this"...

Some create as they go. They really don't have any idea how something will end up when they start. They are willing to improvise or substitute along the way.

Some start with a plan but modify it as they go.

I think I'm mostly in the "Create as I go" category.

How about you?
Not totally confident in my quilting and sewing abilities, I tend to follow a pattern - mostly. My cooking abilities, however, follow a totally different approach! Definitely the create as I go category there....

All of the above! It just depends on my mood that day. There's only 1 rule in my sewing room - DO WHAT FEELS RIGHT.
