Do you mean "foundation" piecing, or "paper" piecing? There is a huge difference in them. You can use just about anything from comic books to deli-paper for foundation piecing. However, paper piecing requires you to print or trace a pattern onto paper, most usually done on your printer, so if you used phone book pages, you are going to have a hard time seeing your pattern lines to sew on.

Phone books. Free, and they put too many on my front steps. I used to to toss them in the recycle until I heard about using them for foundation piecing. Being that I am a true scrapper, I am frugal. Eventually, there will be no more phone books, or, so few, you will have to to order them. Not me.

I use Carol Doak's paper for paper piecing and for foundation piecing I am using used dryer sheets. They can stay in, smell nice and are kept out of the garbage. I am using them for a crazy quilt right now. I mentioned it at my sewing group and several people have started using it also and others have been bringing in plastic bags full to those using them. I won't run out any time soon.
