The controller is a fairly universal one. Mercury Electric made about 700 gazillion of them. They don't usually go bad unless mistreated. The cord is connected inside by two screws. No reason to replace that unless it's actually bad.

The cord plug is another matter. I've not seen one like that. If the plug cannot be opened to replace the wires I don't know where to find one.

From your pics the wires do not look to be all that bad. I don't see any cracks or missing insulation anywhere.

Does that plug have a screw crosswise through it or some other means of opening it up?

Joe, yes there are holes for 2 screws but one is missing. The reason I need a replacement or repair is because there is a loose connection somewhere and it shorts out and the wireing is quite stiff. My husband is going to try and fix it for me, and connect new wire, so we'll see how it goes. I appreciate all your help and input. Thank you, Gina

First, I would try taking out the screw and taking it to a good hardware store to see if they have a matching one and then rewiring with the original plug.

If you have a local sewing repair place, take it in and see if they have a cordset to match.

If that doesn't work, it looks like a Necchi/Pfaff plug like this one:

You could measure the distance between the holes in the plug (center to center to center) and write to Jenny at SewClassic to see if it looks like it would match. I think she also accepts returns (although you would have shipping charges).

I think the hardest part is going to be finding wire that's a match in color. If matching the original isn't important most hardware stores will have brown lamp cord but I think it's a darker shade.

Agreed on finding a replacement screw.

Then some diagnosis is needed.

Check the connectors in the plug to make sure they are tight on the prongs in the machine.
Check the wires to the connectors in the plug.
Check the wire connections in the controller

If this does not fix the problem, then check the wiring inside the machine.

Considering the color of the new wire, brown or classic black is my choice.
