I think a needle with a larger eye is better than smaller. I find fewer problems with poly embroidery thread like Madeira or Isaacord. It hardly ever breaks.
(To some that is anathema as it isn't cotton.)

Your needle size depends on the thread weight. Visit Superior Threads website, they have charts that tell about needles and threads, what the different threads are used most often for & what needle to use with what thread. As for thread weight for quilting, it depends on how much you want the stitching to show. Heavier thread ( 12 weight up to about 30 weight) are pretty heavy ( thick) threads. Common people seem to choose a lot are 40, 50 & 60 weight. 60 being pretty fine thread. The needle has to be the correct size for the thread

needle size depends on thread, but type I would recommend topstitching
I also agree with poly shredding less frequently. I also love isacord, and superiors poly brand. For cotton FMQ the only brand I found that didn't shred on me was king tut, however I still haven't tried presencia. I do love superior's line of threads very much

It depends, there is no correct answer. Depends on the fabric you are quilting. I have an older Bernina and I usually use a 14 with Mettler silk wrapped thread. There a different weights with threads so that varies on the type of needle.
