    Default Question on sashing

I used 7” muslin strips for foundation & covered them with scraps for a church donation quilt. Strips will run up & down. I’m ready to cut sashing for between. I’m thinking 5.5” so it finishes to 5” or will another size look more pleasing?

Sashing is usually smaller than what you suggest. I would consider not more than 3" finished. That size should balance your 6.5" finished blocks. I might even do 2.5" finished sashing.

I mostly cut 2 1/2 inches for my sashing. I like to separate, but no overpower the blocks. Here is one I just did. The blocks are 8 inches.

I go even smaller with 1" to 1 1/2". I want to "frame" the blocks like a picture. Personal choice like most quilt decisions.

Generally the ( formula) for sashing is a number that goes into the measurement of the block, so 7” would be ( balanced with 3 1/2” sashing, or, 6 1/2” with 3 1/4” . Or smaller. If you want 5” between the blocks in order to make it the size you want you might consider multiple strips, like 3 1/2” with a 1 1/2” strip on both sides of it.

My sashings always start with 2.5" strips or smaller if using very small blocks.

it can depend on the look you are going for. if sashings are part of the design, perhaps your sizes will work well. try out some laying in place and see how you like it.

If you are going to go that wide, what I would suggest is cutting white blocks the same size as your foundation blocks and alternating them in the quilt.
