I am making a small charity quilt from a printed cotton panel.
Because the panel was very small I have used a pretty contrasting flannel to make a border and have used the same flannel for the backing.
I’m now wondering about the binding. I fancy using the flannel but wondered if there were any disadvantages to this. I would machine stitch the binding to the front then hand stitch it to the back.

I've used flannel for binding twice. The first time I hand stitched the binding and it was fine. Second time I machine sewed and it was too thick. I got it down, but thought it seemed more bulky. Now if I make a flannel quilt I only bind with regular cotton binding.

Flannel is thicker then cotton so you will need to cut your binding wider for the fold over and bulk. Try a little sample to determine what you will need to cut for width.
i have done many flannel & flannel backed quilts. i have found, as stated by tartan, that because of thickness of flannel (i use double fold only) that a slightly wider strip looks & lays nicer. i also frequently do a fold over, back to front, a very old & traditional style of binding. it looks great & simple to do. i use the foldover style in either flannel or quilting cotton.
