Default Sayings from Grandma....

You remember those pearls of wisdom that Grandma (or someone else), handed down when you were a kid? You might not have appreciated it at the time, but as you got older you saw that she was right. Let's share those old sayings here.

When I would be upset about some trifling thing that had happened, Grandma would say:

"If that's the worst thing that happens to you all day, you're doing pretty well."

I remind myself of that saying all the time and it reminds me how good I really have it.

The most profound my grandmother said, which I thought was pretty stupid when I was young, was:
"Everyone gets old, if they live long enough."

My mother also had some pretty good sayings.
"You'd get used to a wart on the end of your nose if you had it long enough."
or
"Every old crow thinks her little crow is the blackest."

(She was a 1st grade teacher and dealt with proud parents all the time.)

My Grandmother gave me to pearls of wisdom that I remember. When asking how old she was she would say,

"I am as old as my tongue and a little bit younger than my teeth."

The other one was when one of the 5 of us younger one would push the other and fall and be crying she would say,

" Which one of you broke my floor."

That made us all shut up fast. Who would want that responsibility?

I must be channeling your grandma. When my then 7 year old grand-nephew was visiting me, he told me about the bullying he was going through at school. His name is Donald, and the kids were calling him Donald Duck. It upset him, and the kids knew it.

My response was, "Well, if that's the worst they ever call you, you're in pretty good shape."

He thought about it. When he returned to school the following week, he just blew all the bullying off and it stopped very quickly. He's 17 now and very popular in HS. Sometimes the little things we say to a child make a big difference in their lives.

I quote all the time, "You don't get older, you just get more so." I use it to pass of rude or incosiderate people.

1). “Drunk men & little children always tell the truth”

2). ”if you give a pig & a child everything they want, soon you’ll have a good pig & a bad child”

"It will feel better once it stops hurting." Yup, words of wisdom there!

Living in Maine, there is plenty of snow during the winter. I heard my entire childhood, " if we ever run out of money, at least we can have snowballs and milk for supper. "
