This is an Around the World quilt that I made offsetting the rectangles. Not quite squares but you get my drift. It reduces bulk and keeps you from having to match up all the corners.

Ahh.. this is one of the better things about quilting is you are the captain here and what ever you want to do is up to you. It sounds like a great Idea to off set you 4 patches.

Off setting the rows sounds like the way to go. Faster and I think neater looking.

Your quilt, your way. It will just create a different "look" to your use of the 2.5" squares. Why not? experiment and see if you like the result. Some times I will mix in 2.5 X 5" squares to just mix up the look. It is all part of your creativity! Have fun and post a picture of you efforts.

Nesting the seams eliminates the bulk but yes, on a really BIG quilt this can take some time. It all depends on the quilt and the quilter and the pattern.

Eleanor Burns makes her trip around the world quilt in this fashion. There is nothing wrong with off setting the rows. It will look cool imho.

I did something similar but with a square in a square block.

I did that with a jacket I made. I was using rayon batik and I was concerned about trying to match everything with such slippery fabric so i made rows of squares and offset them. It came out really nice and looked good.

2.5 inch squares, no matched corners! Sounds like a really relaxing idea! I might have to steal it!

Enjoy your project. The lovely thing about quilting is while there are rulers ;-), there are NO rules ;-).
