My sewing mojo is out of ideas so I decided to do some mindless strip piecing. I'm thinking about a scrappy coin quilt. Tentative plan is to put together scrappy 6.5 x 10 blocks. Add a white on one side and a consistent color on another. Then do a sort of rail fence thing with blocks at 90 to each other.

Do I cut strips to 6.5 and then put together (more scrappy) or match strips until get to the 10" and cut blocks (cut once)?

Or it it better just to make the long columns and have the consistant color between the stacks?

Any advice appreciated. Its all different fabrics and all different widths.

The one thing I did was make sure each strip had good contrast with its mate.

I’ve made many for charity.

Cut muslin (or thin sheet or even lightweight curtain) 6.5” x 22-24”. Sew on scraps about 2.5” to 3.5” (mix sizes) x 7” to 7.25” so they hang over muslin a bit. After it gets 20-22” long, trim sides so strip is even at 6.5”. My 24” ruler is just right if I keep strip about this long before trimming.

Add on another strip of muslin & continue. Finished strip 76” long (or your choice). I make 6 strips. Then I cut plain strips across WOF (sew 2 together). Place between 76” strips, at sides & across top & bottom. This is odd, but I found out it works best to NOT pin pieced strips to plain for sewing. I usually use pastels but once I used burgundy & it kinda reminded me of stained glass window.

That's an interesting collection of scraps you've got there! I have a lot of scraps and when I feel the need to do mindless sewing, I make strip blocks and the challenge is to find different ways to use them. The coin quilt is always good.

You've got some nice fabric there and good replies to your ?. The beauty of this is it can be so mindless, so don't overthink it. The last quilt is this posting was made with strips; I foundation pieced the strips onto sheets like tranum suggests; the large one finishes 4.5 x 9 "; the smaller one, 3 1/2 x 7 with 1" finished border in black. You can use this idea for any size finished block you want to use.

WIP's now done for NICU babies-scrappies too.

It's really easy to get stuff wonky when you are putting together long rows and foundation strips help a lot, or I cut large and trim down, so I'd probably start with consistent strip widths but make them a little longer -- say 7".

Put two together at a time. Then put the sets of two together, etc. Try to keep the sizes as even as possible, so if you want 5 2" strips, you make (2) sets of two, then add (1) to one set, so you have a 3 and a 2 to put together. Then using one of the seams in the center, I would use that as my horizontal constant and trim the sides to my desired width.

There is fabric all over my floor..

everything right now is 6.75 wide so I have wiggle room to trip down. Its amazing. You think it looks terrible until you take that picture and can see into the future....hey - maybe it isnt that bad.

I dont have any muslin so I could not foundation piece. I just went for it. Who knows what will result?

Just a little comment- it seems some of us are in your spot (mojo wise). I think we're all a little out of sorts from all that's been going on.

When I measured some strip sets were a bit short ... But I'm at the trim down to 6.5 and add sashing step.... And I'm really happy so far. Very satisfying.
