    Default Chew holes

I really need help. My DIL asked me to repair 4 dog chew holes in a queen size quilt that I made for her about 15-20 years ago. I no longer have the fabrics. The holes go completely through the quilt. A couple of the holes are about the size of a nickel. Two are a little larger. It is hand quilted. I have no clue how select the fabric pieces and how to patch. I’m not much of a seamstress. I only sew pieces together for a quilt. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

I would put applique pieces over the holes.

If you can find fabric that is close to the color, you could just applique patches over it....I have done this with a couple of quilts and it worked out fine. I just turned the edges of the patch under and stitched down by hand with blanket stitch. I may actually have used my machine for the stitching if I could have maneuvered the quilt enough...I really can't remember. You could also make a coordinating decorative applique something and stitch it down to add interest. If you have an embroidery machine, you could even embroider a design for the patch....be creative....it will work....

I appliqué a similar colour square over the hole, then put a tad of batting under that and on the backside I appliqué another square. Then I try to stabilize the patch with a few quilting lines. The quilt my grand doggy uses now was originally patched with matching fabrics, now when she visits (she uses the quilt as kind of a pacifier) so I have taken to just patching it with whatever fabric is available.

When you find a suitable fabric (exact match not necessary) just applique a piece of it over both sides of the quilt, and don't forget to insert a small piece of batting to fill the hole. I had to do this in about 20 places with a 1930's quilt that had been chewed through by mice. When done, it was hard to find the repair spots.

I appreciate all the ideas. I will appliqué with some batting. Thank you.

Sorry the quilt you made was subjected to such treatment. I hope you can fix it.

I agree that applique would be best to cover the holes.

....... I'd be tempted to applique doggy footprints!
(all dependent on the "humour" that you and your DIL have over this)

So sorry that this has happened, but good for your DIL for fessing up, and asking you to help her fix it up.
