How do you deal with customers who are irate? I refuse to let people change my opinion of life or the holidays! I'm sorry that they aren't cheerful but my life doesn't revolve around them! I'm a happy go lucky person and you aren't going to ruin my day!
Ok, done ranting!

Why are they irate? Is it product, r service-related? Are they just holiday-weary? Are they impatient?
SInce I am categorically one of the Christmas Shoppers from Hell, my only recourse was to remove myself from the fray. lol (So I KNOW it wasn't me who upset you. lol)

I started a job and was told by the manager that my smile would wear off in 2 weeks. Granted it waned but did not disappear! It was my fault, I over charged the woman a dollar and she had to wait for a manager to come to my register to fix it. The woman raised such a stink because she had to wait a couple of minutes that the manager came over and got a dollar from my till and gave it to her.
It's only part-time but I'm OH so greatful for it!
I work 5 to 6 hours at a time and it feels like I've worked 12 hrs.

First the Mgr. has a problem, they set the tone of the store. I'm a customer service coordinator at a large retail chain store. My job besides stocking, cleaning, addressing compliants and complements is of course ringing customers orders.
I can say that our new store mgr. has a great attitude, helps to keep us smiling, but let's us know where we have messed up politely.
There are some customers you do and will take advantage is given the chance but when you've been there awhile and get to know some of the regulars all will be better.
I will say for the most part our customers are great, although we do have to clean up alot. They notice who is missing, day off or illness, and are concerned. They joke with you and then there are those no matter what you cann't get to smile even if you tickled them.
In my retail years we have always said that Everyonoe should work one Christmas season to have respect for the retail person.
Hang in there....keep smiling....it is contagious.

I manage a medical office and quickly found out you can't please every customer(patient). The majority are wonderful. Don't let the one SOB ruin your day or your smile!! You seem to have a good positive attitude and this is reallized by your customers and they (generally) reflect this back to you.
Just keep smiling and when you punch out at the end of the day get in the car with the music turned loud and DON'T rehash all the bad things that happened. Leave them at work--tomorrow's another day.
You sound like someone I'd like working for me or waiting on me as a customer!!

I worked retail for 3 years and loved it. Most of our customers were women who loved crafts they appreciated all the help we gave them. Customers are messy too but I didn't mind that at least I didn't have to run a register.
