Checking Fabric Orders
#1
I would like to think that I get the full yard that I pay for, but, no.
Now, I feel that I have to add another step to process the fabric purchased online. Check for correct yardage!
I haven't contacted US Fabrics, yet, but I ordered over 40 pieces of 1 yard cuts. Over $500. Beautiful, washed and dried, and not folded yet.
The first piece that I pulled out of the waiting pile yielded only about 33", once folded to straightened. Takes the steam out of the "new fabric excitement". At least it was enough for the binding I had in mind.
I really don't want to check the other 40 cuts for accuracy. I'll reach out to them tomorrow.
Furthermore, I got a credit for 2 pieces that weren't delivered, but they did not explain which two or email about difference.

It usually shrinks more in one direction than the otherv - but I am not able to predict ahead of time which way that will be.

Whenever I know I'll need at least one yard I'll get a yard and a quarter. Even the fancy-shmancy brands shrink - especially now that [it seems] every manufacturer has lowered quality.

I agree with the other posters. Measure your order before washing. I will go one step further: when you purchase a kit, open it immediately and check that ALL the fabric has been included, and that each piece is at least as large as stated in the kit contents list. Also check that the pattern has been included. Ask me why I now do this.
On the other hand, several years ago, I purchased a kit from the clearance section of an LQS. It was on clearance because one piece in the kit had been mis-measured. I got a beautiful $175 kit at 75% off and it was short only 1/2 yard of fabric which I was able to substitute. Pretty good deal in my eyes!

According to Kimberly Jolly of Fat Quarter Shop Cotton fabric will shrink in only one direction. Example a jelly roll strip will shrink in length not width if cut selvage to selvage. Depends on how fabric pieces are cut that determines which way the shrinkage will be. I aways steam or starch my fabric before cutting the size I need from it. I lived and learned about fabric.

3" shrinkage lengthwise sounds like normal shrinkage for cotton. You can't complain about a shortage if you didn't measure before you washed.
It used to be the norm that shops would cut your piece a little long, just for good measure, but that was when fabric was about $3 a yard. Now that it's gotten so high in price, they can't afford to give out more than you paid for. Too bad.

I measure every piece in my order when it arrives, even fat 1/4s, and report any short cuts. I expect to get what I have paid for, but occasional errors do occur and I consider them to be honest mistakes. Companies that consistantly cut short don't get my business.
