The turkeys started going on sale at our local stores. I got a 18 pounder at Safeway for $0.39/pound...7 bucks total! I'm going to cut it up and make meals for us and for our dogs. I plan to hit the other stores in town for their turkey deals too. I need turkey recipes please.

I am the only person in our family who likes turkey.
While the rest have tolerated it when we have been able to gather for Thanksgiving - which isn't often anymore - they don't care for it.
Our younger daughter needs a sitter for the day after Thanksgiving this year, so I will be visiting them for a few days. The current plan is to go out for Chinese. I'm reminding myself that being with them is the more important piece, not what I'm eating. They do like pumpkin pie, which my husband doesn't, so I will be taking one with me and we will have that in the evening.

We invested in the turkey fryer. It does whole chickens just fine. We also dropped "naked" thighs in once. Delicious. I also researched oil and cooking temperatures, and vegetable oil works just fine at 350 degrees, much cheaper than peanut oil. We also feed our dogs chicken! They are both over 100 pounds. The price of canned dog food is ridiculous.

We missed the first sale of the year here. The bin was always empty and we didn't bother to ask. They usually have some pretty sweet deals around here for buy a minimum amount of groceries and get a turkey at a really low price. Our soda pop usually covers the price point!
One year (still back in Seattle) we were chatting with a guy who had a big cart full of after Thanksgiving markdown turkeys. I think they were $0.69/lb no limit! He said he ground them (including skin) -- ground turkey I think back then was 3.99 a pound? Is basically $5 last time I looked.
An empty turkey, even a big one is really not that bad for cooking time or effort. Is all the sides and things that go with Thanksgiving that make it a big effort.
We eat several turkeys a year. We did get a turkey fryer set up and haven't used it yet. I can cook a small (12 lb) on the charcoal weber, we can do bigger on the electric smoker. And there is the oven too, of course!

I come from a large family of all boys (except for myself) with birthdays close on the heels of one another. Some of us share some gene that makes turkey undigestible, or at least everyone in the vicinity will believe it is rotting rather than digesting. Family game nights following holiday turkey dinners became peppered with rude comments, especially when many of us were in those teen years. I don't know why this post triggered this memory but there it is and now I'm wondering if others suffer the same affliction. Turkey is a meat I've learned to avoid or eat in small quantities and since it's just two of us eating we no longer indulge in a whole turkey meal. However, I do love a turkey sandwich with cranberry sauce in it and there's just no substitute without making the meal.

I buy one or two (depending on size) fresh turkeys for Thanksgiving. My son in law cooks the turkey and my daughter makes dressing. She hosts Thanksgiving at her house. Other family members bring all the sides and dessert. All I have to do is enjoy the grands and eat.

There will be just 3 of us for dinner, so I’m cooking a fresh cage free chicken. The guys can have the dark meat and I can go with light. We all win. I r ordered an apple pie from a local diner known for its pies. This will be a cozy meal.
