The face plate? Inside of it? What have you done? I don't think its possible to get back on wrongly. This is a nice explanation of the parts involved. I don't recommend complete disassebly unless you really need to, but I would take of the top screw, washer and spring, then polish up parts and investigate behind there. The square bit in front with a screw is the most protruding part on mine, but it does't touch the face plate, just moves close to it.

No, what I mean is that the piece goes down too low so that if I put the pressor foot on there's no room to put the fabric in to sew. Does that make sense? It hits too close to the feeddogs.
OH- that's a great link, thanks!!!!!!!!!!
My top screw thing doesn't have a wick.

That's what I call needle plate, some call it throat plate. What did your husband do? If he didn't loosen any screws it should in theory be find. It freely moves up and down with the lever? If it at some point has been wrongly adjusted, there should be marks on the rod from where it previously have been. The adjustment screw is the one in front, on the square bit.
Your machine could in theory have a high shank foot on, which is wrong for the machine; double check that it's the basic foot number 45321.

He used some sort of wrench to lift it, then we oiled it and it goes up and down fine but it goes down too low. I would have trouble getting any type of foot on it. I wish I could upload a pic. It hits the needle plate in the down position and in the up position is only goes up a little.
I'm having trouble uploading photos
There are no marks that look like something was done wrong. Maybe I'll take that little screw off and see if I can adjust something, thanks for all your help.

A bit unfortunate, but I guess it's not unheard of. Either way it's not a very common issue with these. I hope the force of the wrench didn't damage anything. I usually go for oiling, wiggeling, more oil and a lot of patience. Adding oil in the right spots and leaving it out on a table over night does wonders. Don't do anyting like that with a needle bar or other parts, they are linked together through out the machine and a lot of things can be pushed out of alignment in stead of freeing up. Luckily the presser bar moves independatly to the rest of the machine; it should be relatively easy to sort out.
How loose is the presser bar? Does it move up and down with the lever at all? The parts behind the face plate (chrome plate on the side) should move it up about half a centimeter then lower it to the feed dogs with more or less pressure depending on the screw on top. When you lift the presser bar lever, inspect the movents of the parts behind there and see if anything is loose, stuck not moving against each other as they should. There's only two parts that lift the presser bar (rod), and it's the back of the lever up against the part of the rectangular bit on the rod. There's not any adjustment on the lever part, just a fastening screw.

I'm so mad. I took the piece off that the needle attaches to and that little thing inside got lost. I swept the floor immediately and can't find it. I remember now that the guy who worked on my featherweight told me not to take that piece off a machine, (right after I took it off )
I was trying to clean the bar so that maybe the presser foot would be flush with the needle plate.
I don't know what I'm going to do. Even if I find that piece it's impossible to put back on.

No, it is not impossible to put back. Keep looking. If you don't find it, I am sure you can purchase a needle holder online or from one of the people here or on other venues. I've looked and looked for things, only to find them later, exactly where I looked before. Pics would make it much easier for us to help you.
