Default I'm going to Japan! Tips on Fabrics, Stores, Tourist/Fabric Destinations?

I'm going to Japan next spring and would love to find some great fabrics for quilting, or otherwise. I'll definitely be in Tokyo and Kyoto, but also plan to visit other parts of the country, yet to be determined. Any suggestions of stores, factories, etc. that I should visit?

Thanks,
~ C

Ditto goes for Spain. I'm going there in a couple of weeks.

I have nothing to advise you on - just wanted to say I'm 'green with envy'! Have a wonderful time in both Spain & Japan and please show us pics of your adventures

I'd look for vintage yukata fabrics. Look at okanarts.com and blueandwhitetokyo.com for ideas and info and even suggestions about where to go.

Thank you...I know...I shouldn't brag. I've waited a long time to do some extensive traveling. Kids, husband, house, work, dogs, horses even chickens always came first. Now it's time to go see the world! I'll definitely post pix!

There is a member here on the board who lived in Japan for many years and will know where to buy the best fabrics. Her username is Gaijin -- you might want to send her a PM.

I'm a HUUUGE Yoko Saito fan, so I'd be researching her to see where her store is, or her products are sold, and if I could get into one of her classes.

This is actually kind of funny, because my husband and I were just talking about quilt shows. I've been to Paducah and Houston, and told him I'd really like to go to the Tokyo Quilt Festival someday. He said he'd like to go to Tokyo too; he'll stay busy eating sushi while I'm at the show.

Me too! They had a special exhibit of her work at Houston this year. If I went to Tokyo I would eat sushi and do the show!

To the OP, I am pretty sure Kyoto has a textile district. You may even be able to get your hands on some kimono scraps. Here is blog I found but I don't know how old it is

Well I looked up Okanarts and Blue and White and both are fabulous resources. Okanarts has a whole page on travelers tips, which led me to a guesthouse that I really want to stay in. Thanks so much everyone! I'll definitely PM Gaijin and go to the Yoko Saito and Kyoto guide links. When is the next quilt show in Tokyo? I'll be there in March.

Research Nippori Textile Town in Tokyo. My favorite store is Tomato. They have everything. You will need an extra suitcase to get everything home! It is close to the subway. Have fun!
