Default My quilt squares are 6 “

Am I supposed to add 1/4”seam allowance around my quilt square for it to come out evenly?

If you want your squares to be 6 inches in the finished quilt top, then you do need to add the 1/4 inch seam allowance all the way around.

well if you use six inch squares they will all measure 5 1/2 inches when sewn together.

Welcome to the quilting board from a Texas member. Hope you enjoy it here. Ask as many questions as you can think up & someone will be around soon to help you. We have a lot of talented quilters on this board who are very helpful & encouraging.

If you are wanting a "finished" 6 inch square you will have to start with a 6 1/2" square. You loose 1/4" on each side when you sew your seams together. I hope this helps you.

Welcome to this board.

All are correct always add 1/4" all around to get the finished size block you want.

If you've made your blocks and they are all 6 inches square, they will come out evenly as in they will meet up evenly and all be 5 1/2 inches when sewn. If you haven't made them yet and want them to come out to 6 inches, you'll have to cut your blocks at 6 1/2 inches.

Welcome to the QB from SE Michigan! If following a standard quilt block pattern for a finished 6" block you should have the 1/4" seam allowance all the way around making your block 6 1/2". The reason that a block usually comes out at 6: is the seams are more than 1/4" when sewn together. It is not uncommon for this to happen even for an experienced quilter. Don't panic. If all of your blocks are 6" then make your quilt and the finished quilt will have 5/ 1/2" square. No pain no gain. I can guarantee that all of us have been there. Next time around adjust your seam allowances to just a bit smaller you will get that nice 6 /12" block. I am glad to see you have jumped right in. Looking forward to seeing a lot of you on the QB!
