I think it's really cute. And yes, you can use flannel.

If you decide on Velcro, you do NOT need a buttonhole and button. Flannel will work instead of felt.

I think she is using a button INSTEAD of velcro.

Personally ... I like the button instead of velcro. It's a great opportunity to use a cute button.

I would put a little sewing machine oil on the inside felt. That may seem strange, but I received a beautiful needle case a few years back. I noticed this year that a lot of the needles have rusted into the inside felt. I do have AC, but that happened anyway. I'm putting some oil on the padding of my case.

Very cute. A very long time ago, I was given one of these made completely out of felt with a button closure.

Thanks for the tutorial, Tartan! I too have an all-felt needle case in a folded hearts design. It was a gift from a special friend and I have used it for years. I've always thought it would be fun to make a similar one.
