I'm a newbie and really love this Carpenters Wheel to use as a center medallion on a sampler quilt I'm planning to make. The ease of this tutorial makes me want to try this!
Thank you for posting! |

This is excellent. I have made it with y seams back in the day when I was piecing by hand. Thanks!

You all are very welcome. I am sorry that I haven't replied before now, however I haven't been on the board in a few years due to health reasons, but I am back now. :)

Thanks for taking the time to share! I have recently caught the medallion quilt bug, so this will come in handy. Thanks again!!
|
Having this chart sure will help. Thank you
|
When I decided to make this I could only find rough information. I printed out these and used them to make a king size two color carpenter wheel It went together fast and easy. Definitely will do this one again. Thanks!

This is a very helpful chart for the Carpenter Star!!! Thank-you!

Thank you. This will be a great cheat sheet, and I won't need to purchase a pattern or try to graph it out

Thank you so much for this. I have always wanted to do a Carpenter's Star . Now that I am retired I am getting into more sewing.

Thank you! I was looking for this, too. You made it easy for me!

This quilt took me about 24 hours! I am still new to quilting or maybe I was doing something wrong! It just took me a looong time!

Thank you so much for your directions, I have always wanted to make one but was too afraid to try it. I made it slightly smaller starting with 6 1/2 " squares ( as my favorite ruler is that wide) and in 3 colors. Not sure what I am doing for a border yet.
|
very pretty :)

Thank you so much. I was just getting ready to draw one out when I found your tutorial.
|
Thank you. This is a good photo pattern.

To make HST take the finished size you want and add 7/8"; example if you want a 9.5" finished HST (if you are using precuts for the rest of the quilt that are 10"), then add 7/8" to 9 & 1/2" = 10 & 3/8" square. To make things easy you could just cut your strips 10.5 X WOF, subcut to 10.5 X 10.5, draw a diagonal line on back of one piece, place two squares right sides together, sew 1/4" away from center diagonal line on both sides, cut apart, and square them up to 10". That makes a humongous Carpenter's Star but hey, why spend all your time cutting when you want to sew.

Thanks so much! I was actually thinking about doing a giant one to use as a backing for my next quilt, and your chart will come in handy!

The Carpenter Star pattern is such a simple block but makes a big impact when done - I have baby blankets as well as smaller blocks and created larger quilts. The baby quilts turn out so pretty. The beauty of it you can make the blocks any size you like - just be consistent.Like you stated it works up fast - very fast

Here's my version. I'm very pleased with it. It took about eleven to twelve hours total. I used the Magic Eight method for making eight HSTs at a time. I made two Magic Eights of each color combination. I'm sure that helped save time. I used yardage instead of charm squares and trimmed the HSTs to five inches unfinished. Stitchinbee's directions were very helpful.
I have a friend who's having twin grandkids next year and I think I'll make this again. I may use just one color for the inner star and a different one for the outer star, switching colors for the second quilt. Tate |

Make your HST units "finish" at 1-1/2 inch. If you use the cut the squares on the diagonal method - cut the squares 2-3/8 (or 2-1/2 inches and trim the sewn units - my preferred way to do things) 6 x 1.5 = 12 |
I love pictures to learn, i am a visual learner so appreciate the time you took to post-thank you. Tate your version is very nice.

Thanks so much for doing this - it's such a help.

I used 6 - 1/2" blocks and ended up with the star 48" square before any borders. That would work great to cover the center of a double bed. I'd suggest measuring the top of your bed and divide by 8 to get an approximate block size.
