I am excited to see your fabric box sandpat :D:D:D

cutebuns 12-11-2009 09:11 PM

Should I tell you all that I buy my elastic by the roll? It will be a while before I run out, I think the roll that is the size for this had 144 yards on it

cutebuns 12-11-2009 09:12 PM

And I haven't even started drawing yet. I should have, I hope that this weekend I get some stuff done and I can focus on other things for a bit.

I got more elastic today..9 yrds...should do me huh??? Got the insides all done and I'm ready to sew the outers to the bottom, then gussets...I'm almost there..I can feel it!

DH is very impressed....said it "looks better than store bought!"

Wooo Hooo, praise indeed from DH - I am chuffed to bits - 'better than store bought', and when you think of the cost, it is very little really - a total of three quarters of a yard of fabric, a few inches (inches Patti, not yards LOL) of elastic, small quantity of batting and some card, probably less than an A3 sheet.

sandpat 12-12-2009 05:44 AM

CB...you buy like I do...if a little is needed...buy alot..you just never know, right???

Lesley..I am an idiot....even after all your warnings...I put the batting on the outsides...sideways...so last night had to strip those, cut new batting and redo. But, I did all the insides finished and then got all the outsides sewn to the bottom..I'm almost home now for sure!!

I was a little confused about the pockets (I don't have a sewing background)..but I ended up sewing a hem all the way around..then doing my turning for the elastic. I then sewed the elastic together (I did that on the elastic straps too)..then just slide it over the lining piece. I hope that will work. The pockets looked like little skirts before I sewed the bottom down  Please tell me that sewing the elastic together in the back will work out fine... :?

Lacelady 12-12-2009 06:55 AM

Oh, Patti, of course your elastic will work fine. I sewed mine together, because I couldn't see that just glueing them would hold in the long term. As for the pockets, you probably did more than needed. Yes, I put a casing for the elastic along the top, and that was it - no sewing down the sides or bottom, as the sides get glued down, and the bottom I put a few stitches in just to hold the pleats or gathers in place, but the edges were still raw. Don't forget that all the raw edges will be hidden when these box linings get stuck to the outsides.
As for the other little problem, don't worry, we are all human, and if you make another box, you won't do that again, will you. I am dying to see the finished box, and the fabric you chose. Just people's choice of fabric makes them look incredibly different. Some do really startling interiors, just for the hell of it. I once saw one that had a bright green frog appliqued to the lining in the bottom, for a joke.

Double wow, Elle, what a lovely box - Even with you telling me to find the deliberate mistake, I didn't spot it, so I doublt suppose many others would either, and I love the fabric, I am rather partial to oriental designs myself. You seem to have made this one quicker, was it easier this time? My second one was.

Butterflyspain 12-12-2009 02:20 PM

Yes it did seem quicker this time. I donīt think anyone will notice really. its a deliberate mistake that works. :?

sandpat 12-12-2009 04:25 PM

Elle, its beautiful!!! I don't see any mistakes...and wouldn't care anyway. I have mine almost finished...just have to glue the 2nd side of the gussets and put the liner in the bottom..Its pretty..I like it..will be able to post a pic tomorrow.

cutebuns 12-12-2009 11:39 PM

I do a lot of sewing as well so I use a lot of elastic and I have rolls in several sizes, but I also get it wholesale so it is a lot cheaper than going to the fabric store, I probably pay what she spent on the 9 yds, for the whole roll, it is quiet inexpensive when you can get it that way, and it sure comes in handy when inspiration hits and I need stuff done, I have all the things like that to work, I don't need to worry about little things, the ladies at the fabric store I am sure wonder, I buy fabric and usually nothing else.

cutebuns 12-12-2009 11:39 PM

The box is great Elle!

Butterflyspain 12-12-2009 11:57 PM

Thanks everyone, this box seemed to go faster and I like it too. I really think they make super presents.

Elle

cutebuns 12-13-2009 12:08 AM

I was thinking that it would be great for the girls especially, it is just so hard to find the time right now to dive in.

Lacelady 12-13-2009 01:48 AM

Well, if you can't get some done for Christmas, there is always their birthdays, it would still make a nice present for that. And I think that people of all ages appreciate something made especially for them, which you can do, just by your choice of fabric.
I will be interested to see who might tackle making one after Christmas, when some of the pressure is off.

OK...drum roll pleeeeeze....Here is my box! All finished and pretty! Lesley thanks so much for this tute. I've never tackled this type of project before and it sure was fun. I'm pretty proud of my box...DH is really impressed too! I might make one for him, you know for his man junk...

Lacelady 12-13-2009 06:28 AM

Woooo Hooo, Patti, well done, it looks a great box, and I love the bright contrast lining. You made a super job of it. Pat yourself on the back and award yourself bonus points.

A man box - hmm, what about faux leather fabric to cover it?

sandpat 12-13-2009 06:42 AM

Thanks Lesley....I'm not sure what I would use to make a box for him. I'll have to figure out what he would be putting in it I guess. The leather would be cool though!

Don't forget you could make it without the gussets, so that it didn't fall open when you took the lid off. Instead, each side would need to be sewn together. You could do this after each lining piece is glued to the box outer, and of course, the elastic and pockets can be eliminated too. Is he a cufflinks, hankies and small change type of DH? you could make a miniature hex tray to put inside for the small change. (box lid and brim sides, like a miniature lid, but pad the inside, not the outside with batting).

sandpat 12-13-2009 08:00 AM

  Well...he's more of a sweat pants, T-shirt, and sleeve wiper kinda guy...but I'm sure I'll come up with something..or not..

pennyswings 12-13-2009 10:53 AM

Elle, what mistake??? I know you did tell us, but if you hadn't probably no one would have noticed. We are our own worst critics aren't we????
Another beautiful box. I think the mistake was like a Freudian slip, so now you have a box for you, LOL ;-) . But truly it is lovely.

Chrickett 12-13-2009 10:59 AM

ONLY TWO MORE HOURS FOR ME AND I CAN OPEN MY SS, I AM SO EXCITED.

pennyswings 12-13-2009 10:59 AM

Way to go Patti. Love the box, it came out beautiful and you did a fantastic job. Love purple and white together. Thanks for posting the finished product.

I LOVE your fabric box!!! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
It is beautiful, the fabrics are gorgeous!!!
You did AWESOME!!! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Your description of DH just cracks me up!!! He's a MANLY MAN!!! 8-) 8-) 8-) What a great place to empty his pockets into at night!!!

cutebuns 12-13-2009 12:30 PM

that is a great box, I am thinking maybe getting DS to help make them on his day for his sisters, something that he can help make without a lot of sewing and something that the girls could use. I will have to reread the supplies and look when I head in today

sandpat 12-13-2009 02:37 PM

Yes CB...your DS could do it...the sewing is mostly hand sewing though. There is lots of gluing and waiting for the glue to dry. DH thought I worked on it forever...but it was mostly doing a little here, then wait...then do a little more....then wait.... ;)

Lacelady 12-13-2009 02:38 PM

Good idea, Cutie - as long as he doesn't get glue everywhere except the box, things should go well.

Amma, why not - DH's always have pockets full of STUFF, don't they?

cutebuns 12-14-2009 11:16 AM

He has been known to pick up a needle and thread on occasion. I insist that all the kids have the basics down. He is pretty good with glue as well. I tend to try and do a lot of hand crafts with the kids. Though it is harder now that are older and info other things.

Lacelady 12-14-2009 02:10 PM

Well then he should be a natural to help you with these for the girls. Go for it.

sandpat 12-14-2009 04:10 PM

Oh yes...CB...this would be great to do for them and he could do it!

cutebuns 12-14-2009 04:11 PM

I have Tues next week booked with him to do things, it will be good because in between we can play video games etc. though he likes to bake as well.

sandpat 12-15-2009 06:37 AM

Sounds like a good time CB.....you can send cookies here just anytime you want... 8-)

Sarah C 12-15-2009 05:18 PM

The sewing box pattern is awesome and the photos are so well done that I believe I can do this now. Thanks. Sarah C

Lacelady 12-16-2009 05:06 AM

Go for it Sarah, I would love to see more pics of boxes being made.

Love the box Patti, you made a great job. How about buying a chomois leather for the outside, just an idea.

Penny it was a happy mistake, coz no one would ever guess unless I told them.

That was a wonderful tutorial and beautiful boxes. Thank you so much. And I think I learned that clothespins (here) are called pegs in Ireland. Thank you.

LOL, yes, we peg out the washing with them! (Though, with our weather, not many of us do, we all have dryers). They are sometimes called clothespegs, but not pins.

Thank you for the nice comments, I hope you feel able to make a box someday, and if you do, please post a pic. Happy Christmas.
