I am thrilled to bits that it went down well - that is great. Make the next one for you - you deserve one too. Happy Christmas!

Lacelady 12-26-2009 01:11 PM

Now the main part of Christmas is over, who is going to be the next one to try one of these boxes?

Chrickett 12-26-2009 01:45 PM

I think I will get on to it starting Monday.

brushandthimble 12-26-2009 02:39 PM

I think I found a piece of cardboard to use. I will probably print out the directions this week.
Thank you so much for the tutorial!

LOL, well done for going for number two, Sandpat - I don't know how many Elle managed, I haven't heard from her for a few days.

Lacelady 12-27-2009 04:07 PM

Well done Loretta, it's a lot quicker to do than making a piece of lace!

wvdek 12-27-2009 05:06 PM

Uh oh, just found this post again. After a couple of projects are in the mail this week, then I think I shall attempt this one. Think it will also help me to re-cover an old jewelry box that I found at a flea market that will hold all of my baubles and then some.

Love all your purdy boxes ladies. Hope to see more.

ButterflySpain, Beautiful boxes!! I love the oriental fabric.

I have made a start, sort of
I made the templates, now to go choose the fabric and cut the templates out of the card.

Butterflyspain 12-29-2009 08:13 AM

Thank you so much for the compliments, I have to get some goodies now to put in each one.

Elle

Chrickett 12-29-2009 09:25 AM

Butterfly

What kind of cardboard are you useing for your boxes that are so very beautiful. Chrickett

brushandthimble 12-29-2009 12:54 PM

Well I chose the fabric from my stash, a Kaffe Fassett, and cut out most of cardboard I had on hand. Can you believe it...I ran out of cardboard with the 6 lining rectangles left:(
I will go out tomorrow and look for more. I think what I used was matting board.
I was thinking I would make a template out of freezer paper to cut the hex's out of the fabric. I hope to make them for my nieces, after I make the first one :)

Butterflyspain 12-29-2009 12:55 PM

I am using shoe boxes, but they are not quite big enough for the top and base so found some toy boxes that had been thrown away by someone. I have used corrugated, the only porblem with that is it makes the boxes heavy.

pal 12-29-2009 01:21 PM

Heavy is good - isn't it? I love all of them, especially the Asian looking one. It looks like it is not as high as the others, like a box to keep pearls in. How do you cut the mat board, with an exacto knife? Have you tried the foam core? This is a wonderful project, but it looks like a job for a perfectionist.

Lacelady 12-29-2009 02:08 PM

Elle, that latest box is absolutely delightful, well done, you are making a great job of them. Corrugated is OK, but as you say, makes for a heavier box, but that shouldn't detract.

Brush, Matt board is a great card to use, will make a really sturdy box. And don't worry too much about getting the hex's in fabric exact, because all the edges get wrapped to the other side of the card and stuck down, or in the case of the outer lid, the edges get covered with the brim covering, so be sure to leave yourself a good allowance, (at least half an inch, but I tend to leave three quarters of an inch if I have enough fabric.)

Pal, I use an old blade in a rotary cutter to cut my card, it works a treat. I always mark the old ones with some nail varnish so I know which is which.

sandpat 12-29-2009 04:27 PM

Great job Elle! Those are beautiful boxes! I want to start on #2...pulled the fabric for it..duh...not enough cardboard left. I'll round some up in the next day or so hopefully.

Yes, you really need to make one for yourself! Mine went over good as a gift...I put in 3 spools of thread, a small pair of scissors, some elastic (I keep borrowing from my friend), and some pins. She loved it, so I'm a hero now..see the huge "S" on my chest????

Hi, well to be honest I know I should use an exacto knife but donīt have one so been using my old scissors. Donīt know about foam core, not heard of that one.

Heavy is ok because it makes for a sturdy box, I like the heavy one better for that reason.

Butterflyspain 12-30-2009 05:37 AM

Pal, these boxes are very easy to make. I downloaded the instructions at the beginning of this thread and its a sinch. Try it you will be amazed.

Thank you Elle.

Oklahoma Suzie 12-30-2009 11:11 AM

Beautiful sewing box. maybe someday I will make one.

brushandthimble 12-30-2009 02:05 PM

Started mine today, cut the top fabric wrong and need to more, for the elastic and pockets, so if I have to add a thrird fabric I will. Not a project I should have done in front of the TV:)
Glue is drying so I am finished for today.

amma 12-30-2009 02:27 PM

All three of your boxes are gorgeous!!! I can't wait to see the next one :D:D:D

Oh, Brush, I am so sorry - you must be really annoyed, but since the elastic and pockets go inside, you could use the same as the lining fabric if you have enough of that, and a third fabric would also look OK, so don't despair too much.

ooops, posted twice, sorry.

sandpat 12-30-2009 05:01 PM

Brush...it shouldn't be a problem....a third fabric will actually look nice! I do know what you mean about working in front of the tube though....I did all my sides...sideways....

Old Owl Gray 01-01-2010 06:42 AM

Will certainly try this. Thank you!

Well done Owl, I hope you get on OK, and please post a pic when it is done. Everyone loves to see the different variations.

brushandthimble 01-01-2010 02:22 PM

I choose a third fabric it is the same color as the outside fabric just a different Kaffe Fassett print. Still working on it, should be finished tomorrow and I will post a picture.
My husband told me I would have had it done if I didn't spend much time on the computer LOL

sandpat 01-01-2010 04:00 PM

Oh gosh...my DH tells me that kind of stuff all the time! As you can see...I pay lots of attention to him

Do hurry though, I can't wait to see your box!

Lacelady, thank you so much for the tutorial for the box!
I enjoyed making the first one and will a couple more.
Your directions are great!

sandpat 01-02-2010 07:32 AM

Brush...that is a beautiful box! And I love the addition of the 3rd fabric...I just knew that would work! Isn't Lace just our hero for posting this tute????!!!!

brushandthimble 01-02-2010 09:53 AM

Sandpat, thank you; Lace sure is our hero!

Butterflyspain 01-02-2010 12:14 PM

Beautiful box. I showed mine to a friend today and she asked for the pattern. Lesley I think you are going to be famous

Elle

Lacelady 01-02-2010 01:32 PM

Brush, you made a great job of making that box, and no one would know about your TV 'mistake'. There is a saying about there being no mistakes, only opportunities, isn't there? I'm so glad you were able to make it and better still, that you perhaps enjoyed it? I hope so.

Thanks, Elle, but please don't quote me as being the designer, it isn't mine, a lady named Dilys Fronks designed the original (I think/hope I put that somewhere near the front). All I did was to take pics of the steps as I was making mine. It's easier to follow pictures I think, than to try and make out what a diagram is meaning, and some people aren't good at following written instructions.
