They do love gluing things, it depends on the kid to what iron, I like the big on as it sits on the fabric, just remember to turn off the steam, even if they have help with the ironing, they can so the actual sewing all by themselves. and that way their corners etc will come out pretty good, especially for a beginner. it was prefect to keep it all in place and they just zigzagged around it. we did the whole quilt at once so once they sat down, it didn't take long to go around the whole thing. and yes, no pins to pick out, run over and or possibly pick themselves with.

Thanks for the great tute! I'm definately going to give it a try with my next binding. It makes me crazy when I'm stitching it down and the thread keeps getting caught on the pins. This will surely help! Great tute Amma!

amma 12-01-2009 01:54 PM

I think that you will really like it

Barb_MO 12-01-2009 02:36 PM

Why do you iron after using the glue?

cutebuns 12-01-2009 02:45 PM

It sets the glue so that you don't have to sit there and wait for it to dry.

Barb_MO 12-01-2009 03:14 PM

Thanks, thought that must be the case.

cutebuns 12-01-2009 03:31 PM

After helping the kids with it, it is very easy and simple to do, I don't know that unless I was maybe doing a scalloped edge and it wasn't going well, I don't know that I would use it for me, but it definitely helped with the kids stuff.

Barb_MO 12-01-2009 05:43 PM

I think I will try in on my bindings and especially at the miter corners.
I think it would be helpful when doing the fun & done quilts too.

amma 12-02-2009 05:51 PM

I bet it would help with keeping those folds in place while you sew the fun and dones :D
Let us know how it works for you, please!

Barb_MO 12-02-2009 07:10 PM

I will let you know. I'm going to try it on a quilting project in a few days.

laadw 12-23-2009 10:28 AM

Glue works good for appliques as well. I use the stick glue that the kids use for projects. It lets the applique lie flat and keeps it stuck to the fabric while I sew. Pins always make a bumpy edge when you are dealing with tiny pieces. I love this idea for binding quilts. Thanks.

Barb_MO 12-23-2009 12:28 PM

I tried it and it works wonderfully. I have to find a new place to store my Elmer's glue bottle thought. I had it on top of my sewing machine cabinet and grabbed it when I was cleaning my machine thinking it was machine oil. I was at the squeezing stage when I realized it wasn't machine oil!

lisalovesquilting 12-23-2009 10:06 PM

I like the glue idea. To avoid getting stuck by pins when doing it by hand the quilters clips are great. Small hair clips are the same thing and much cheaper.

amma
Thanks so much for the demo.
I am going to try this method.
Do you then hand stitch your binding or sew by machine???
I hand sew only becuase I think it looks better and I don't always catch the binding on the other side or will using the glue help to keep everything in line????

OH NO!!! I am glad that you caught it in time!!! I have to keep my permanent fabric glue hid so that I don't mix it up with the Elmer's LOL.

I tried the glue sticks too, but sometimes I found the pieces got wonky rubbing them with the stick. So I use Elmer's for them too

You only use a small drops and it is placed far enough away from the edge of the binding, so you won't even know it is there when hand sewing. I over did it on a scrap to test it, and I could still easily hand sew through those areas and machine sew. It did not gunk up either needles, either.

If anyone is doing the Fun & Done quilt, Elmers is a God send, espcially on turning over and stitching the back pieces to the front.

amma 12-26-2009 09:37 PM

WooHoo!!! I was hoping it would work :D:D:D
I am going to give this a try this year :D:D:D

whosies 12-28-2009 05:40 PM

[quote=sarahelloyd]Hi again, PVA glue is a gloopy white glue.

Have you tried mixing this PVA glue, that you have, with some water to thin it down somewhat?

amma 01-02-2010 05:24 PM

let us know what you think of this method, ok? :D:D:D

granny216 01-06-2010 04:21 PM

amma, I've been using baste glue forever that I got at the quilt shop but running out one day I used Elmer' school glue and the tip off the baste glue and it works fine. Sure saves all the pinning.

lucyb 01-21-2010 09:53 PM

Why didn't I think of that. What a great way to do binding.

lucyb 01-21-2010 09:57 PM

Thankyou sandpat. I have never thought og using a decorative stitch on a binding. I'll have to try that

Jeri6 01-24-2010 12:31 AM

Emma, Thank You for the demo. It was great and I learned alot. I am off to get a new tip and ready to try using this method.

You are all welcome :D:D:D I am glad that it has been helpful :D:D:D

Here is the package of tips that fit Elmer's bottles that I found in my local Walmart. They can also be found at JoAnn's, Michaels, and other craft shops. They are sold with the little bottles of acrylic craft paints.

There are 2 of the plastic tips that screw onto the bottle and 3 different sized metal ones

Thanks so much for the great tip and the wonderful tutorial on using glue instead of pinning! I just love all the little hints and tips I am getting from all you!!!!

cjaye44 01-31-2010 06:52 AM

Thanks so much. I am more of a visual person and this was perfect. I need more pot holders and mats so will practice on them.

SewExtremeSeams 01-31-2010 08:16 PM

Thank you Amma for all of your helpful tips. Your pictures are very helpful. Someone else said they learn by seeing. Think that applies to me also... visual is always best. Linda

watterstide 02-01-2010 04:02 AM

i think we discussed this before, about the tips..in Joanns..they are in the decorative paint section..ceramic paints bottles. not where i thought it would be. under 5 bucks, i used a coupon! to make it even cheaper! lol

sewandsewcarol 02-01-2010 06:09 AM

What a good way to keep things exactly where you want to sew, your explanation and photos were great. I guess you can call it my first lesson learned for the day
