i love this glue method couldnt keep a seam straight to save my life and all my xmas wall hangings were done this way for seams and bindings. but i have 2 questions:
is alenes tacky glue the same as elmers? and i have a heck of a time with the actual quilting part and on all my wall hangings i used fusable fleece and wonder under but am wonder if using the glue to baste the whole thing would work hate basting spray ended up everywhere and tried june taylor fusable batting doesnt always fuse |
No aleene's tacky glue is not the same and will very likely mess up your machine. Also keep in mind that it's elmer's school glue, not the regular elmer's. I'm pretty sure the regular stuff is not the same.
personally I wouldn't glue a big thing like that but if you do be sure every bit of it is dry before stitching. |
Thanks so much for the tute!! I have searched and searched for those liylle tiny tips and can't find them. You said a thrift store, Like W mart? What dept.?
Thanks Blessings Terri |

Thank for the nice tips and pictures.I will be using this way soon.Just need to get a bottle with small tip.
|
what a great idea! thanks
|
I'm going to have to try this. So does the glue really keep everything together the whole time? I am amazed by your corners. AND, what can I do this ahead of time and maybe finish it the next day or two later?

I loved your tutorial, I am doing a quilt called French Rose, the rose shapes are cut and the stacked one on top of other and sewn in place. I was pinning and sticking my fingers, .I found some clear school glue by elmers and started using it. I let the blocks set for a while and went back and sewed then up, no sliding, no wrinkles and no pin sticks, I will be using glue a lot. Thanks again.

I was looking on the internet for the bottles and tops and found information that said that you can buy empty bottles with the same size tips. I found them here: http://www.gauntindustries.com/2_Oun...s-HYPO_49.html

WOW - I know how I am going to bind my next quilt
|
Hi! I could never find the small tips so I switched to glue sticks and haven't regretted it not one time. I've found all sorts of "sewing uses" for the glue sticks like, hemming t-shirts; the fabric is hard to get it stay put even pinning it but the glue and a iron works every time. Have found there are times when I couldn't find white glue sticks and finally tried the purple disappearing glue and it worked fine. When it dried, there was no sign of the purple! Chris

Thank you so much!

Thanks so much for sharing. I just finished watching a Sharon Schamber video on youtube about this and have ordered a couple of microtip bottles from a quilling supply store. As a cute aside...my youngest daughter, now 21, is named Emma. When she was a toddler if anyone asked her name, she'd look down, smile demurely and say..."Amma"....she was nearly six before she referred to herself correctly. When I saw your name I had to smile. Thanks again.

I just learned how to use a "quilt boot ruler". Made by Kathie weirzbicki ( sic?) Really neat method, but most of all, I LOVE the finished edges. I know there is a YouTube video showing how she does it, I'll try to find it and post it for you all.

Thanks, I am going to try gluing, I am really tired of getting stuck by pins all the time.
|
Wonderful job on the tutorial, I had seen it demoed but hadn't tried it, it may be time...
|
awesome tutorial - and great thinking! thank you so much :)
|
So do you iron the wet glue with the dry iron to set the glue?
|
Yes you want the glue dry so you need to set it with the iron. Also if you don't set it, the fabric doesn't really seem to stay stuck together.

I've used Elmers glue sticks for applique but never thought about using the liquid before. Thanks for the tute. I have a quilt ready for binding and I will definitely try your technique.
|
Thanks ;)

Thanks for the tips. You all just keep coming up with new ideas to make life easier. Keep'em coming.

This is GREAT!!
|
Thanks so much for the great lesson

I'm going to the dollar store as soon as they open up as I have a quilt I'm working on now and I hate pins.
|
ok, got my glue and the little needle thingy a couple weeks ago.
Quilted 2 quilts in the last few days. Got my binding for both of them prepared and ironed last night. So today, I am going to use this glue method for the first time. i can't wait! I HATE binding. This looks right up my ally. NO PINS! :) THANKS AMMA! |

Thanks so much for the tutorial, it made everything wonderfully clear. Now to see if I can find a bottle at my dollar store.
I really liked the tip about leaving the dot of glue to dry on the tip, because when I was working on miniature furniture I had glue dry in a similar tip and I ended up throwing the bottle away. |
Thanks Amma! I can't wait to try this. I think our girl scouts will have to give this a whirl on some hot pads, for a quick sewing lesson. I will try it on my next binding too. Sounds very helpful.

Sweet...i should try that after all the poking incidents i had this week (HINT: never quilt when nervous and tired).
And btw does applique work the same way? just because i have one already |

Janetlmt sent me a pack of the glue sticks...the purple that are for fabric or paper. I hope to never go back to using those pins ever again. I picked up a 4 pack at the Dollar Store today for $2. I love using glue instead of the pins. To me it lines up better and it doesn't bulk up like it does with the pins sometimes.
|
IMHO this is the best way for me to do binding
|
this is a good idea,I have heard of people using it ..but I haven't. But the way it looks I may have to try.

Has anyone had an opinion on using the "washable Elmers GEL glue" (pale blue/translucent)? Just asking since I found an unused bottle in our cupboard. Thanks for any input.
|
I wonder if the blue color gel will stain?
I would probably test it first :D:D:D |

I recently made a "10 Min Block" quilt and someone suggested glue basting the sides of the curved diamonds down prior to top stitching them down.
I used clear Elmer's glue (washable) and the point of a wooden skewer to put *dots* of glue in the necessary areas. Pressed with a dry iron to set/dry and those curves were crisp as crisp can BE! They were a DREAM to top stitch! I know had I tried to pin the curves down they would have been wavy or slightly distorted, but it was the cleanest looking top stitching I've EVER DONE!
