That is sooooo pretty. I think I like the rectangles and squares the best. I might have to try one!
Darn! I just gave away a big sweatshirt that I thought I would never use because it was so big. Maybe I'll look at Goodwill and buy it back :)

Great have wanted to do this for a very long time !! Hope to get to it after holidays !!!! Picture of your finished jacket ? Please and thank you .
|
I made two of these in a class, and used fabric glue to hold a few scraps in place and then sewed them down before I glued more down. I did glue/sew onto the wrong side of the shirt so that the inside of my jacket was smooth, not fuzzy. Collar stayed on until jacket was complete, then cut off and binding sewn around the whole jacket. Fabric cuffs were sewn on so they could be folded up.

How nice..I have a sweatshirt waiting for me to make a jacket. Maybe I can get it done before the holidays! Thankyou, so much for the tute and all the diffrent ideas to make an origional jacket for everyone. I hope all post the pictures. I wanted to make a fractured bargello..but have never made a bargello of any kind so I was afraid to try it without a pattern. It looks easy enough...so maybe..i can wing it! If so I will post a picture : )

Terrific tuturial - Thank you. Beautiful jackets everyone (that Day of the Dead fabric is brilliant - think I'll have to get some).

Bump! Stashbuster project!

Finished my sweatshirt jacket today! Love the pony fur! thanks for the great tutorial!
|
Could you take a pic of the back so we can see it, too please?
|
I love the jackets.
|
those are nice looking

I have been collecting pinwheels. All sizes - all colors. My intention was always to put them into a jacket of some sort, but now I have the inspiration to DO it. We have a challenge due in May, so now I have an idea and a deadline. Sounds like something might get done. Thanks, UGLY COOK for the wonderful tut.
|
I absolutely love the brown jacket. Your tut is great fodder for my longarm!
|
Thank you for the tutorial. Great job! I love all the beautiful jackets everyone else has posted too. The one trimmed with 'pony fur' is fantastic. It gave me a few ideas 'outside of the box'. A camo done with more free form shapes instead of angular cuts is one.
Also someone mentioned putting in a zipper instead of using binding. I think it might work using a hooded zipped sweatshirt. Then just cut off the hood and put binding around the neck |
Is this a child's size? It is adorable

Wonderful tutorial. I have seen these made and almost took a class for it once. Now having access to a tutorial, sure is more tempting.

I got my mom hooked on these. She had to pick out smaller sewing projects due to her hands. Quilts just got to be to big for her any more.
|
Has anyone done these jackets using fleece fabric?
|
Sounds like a good idea to use fleece, I would like to try it with a fleece indian print and use sherpa to line it... Yeah I want to try it
|
Looks great! Thanks.

I made one of these a couple years ago in class and we had so much fun! I made mine out of a dark blue sweatshirt and a variety of snowflake fabrics. We used glue sticks to glue the fabric pieces on the sweatshirt; I had so much fun that I became addicted to glue sticks for quilting LOL I never took a picture of it and unfortunately I left it at a restaurant and it was gone by the time I got back :( The instructions here are are almost exactly how we did ours - so thank you for the GREAT tutorial!!! I look forward to making another one; my office is always freezing cold and another one of these would be perfect.

Like to try this ~ neat idea

I happen to find the following video on Youtube this afternoon from Kaye Wood and her guest showing how to make a fractured bargello jacket similar to this tutorial, but a bit more structured. I've never made a bargello quilt, but I loved the way this jacket turned out.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9CX8xDNn8w Regardless of which method you prefer, the guest on this video gave one huge tip. Have your sweatshirt wrong-side out when attaching the fabric. You should sew to the fuzzy side. That puts the nice smooth side of your sweatshirt to the inside. By putting the sweatshirt inside-out, you don't have to worry about the fuzzy inside of your jacket pilling up on you or your clothes. |

Ok, I decided on the medium blue thread. I set my zig zag stitch length at 1.0. There will be some fraying so I wanted the stitching to contain it somewhat.
I start by running a straight stitch around the outside edges, there's no need for zigzagging since those edges will be either in the seam or under the binding. Be careful not to stretch the sweatshirt while you are stitching the pieces on. I straight stitch along the sides of any pieces on an outside edge that won't show Here's what my zig zag stitches look like |
