This block can be scrapped, planned or use charm squares and honeybun precuts. It can look like a traditional Pineapple block or with some other fabric placements be a great block to feature a fussy cut or photo. Here are two of my experimental blocks and a PDF with complete instructions and some sample full quilt layouts.

this uses 5 squares and 1.5 strips in a picture frame layout

Here I randomized the stripwidth and corner size. What do you think? Tote? Pillow? Tabletopper?

here is a PDF. I hope the directions are clear. Have some fun today!

jquilt214 07-28-2011 10:53 AM

This is a great idea. You can use leftover strips and make it sort of scrapppy.

audsgirl 07-28-2011 08:01 PM

Thanks! I downloaded it and will try it soon.

degrandpre16 07-29-2011 05:48 AM

I am new to Quilt Board. Thank you so much for the mock pineapple block instructions. I have always steered away from pineapple blocks because they look like a lot of work and very complex. I will definitely try your method.

kathymarie 07-29-2011 01:48 PM

Thank you for this....I make lots of Pineapple quilts the Eleanor Burns way....but this is truly neat!

judyyoungs 07-29-2011 08:15 PM

This would be a nice project with a picture in the center and then framed. Thanks for the pdf file

I found this on line. It is the basically the same thing just without the corner triangles. It was on a Simplicity free pattern site. I did edit it a bit taking out references for the ruler it is meant to sell. I don't think you need the ruler as any square ruler would do. I think it would make a nice addition to a quickie, no fuss, pineapple block reference.

I can see what you mean. It would be nice. I also thought you could quilt it, and then cut the center out with enough left over to wrap around an opening in a cardboard frame for a cute quilted picture frame, or maybe for featuring a photo on a quilted photo album cover. Also you could incorporate a open ended piece of clear vinyl into the center square so a photo could be dropped in or changed as often as you liked. It would make a good tote for new grandma so she could feature the baby.

Thank you so much....... I'd love to use this for a future Scrappy project :-D

oksewglad 07-31-2011 07:18 AM

I've never been much for pineapple blocks as they seem steppy and waste fabric, but this one sheds a whole new light on the block. Thanks, and will give this a try for sure.

nwm50 07-31-2011 08:26 AM

Another one to try out on my list ! Thanks....

Neat quilt block. Have been trimming scraps and have a bag of 5" and 4" blocks.

bchuggins 08-05-2011 03:52 PM

Great tutorial!

np3 08-05-2011 05:48 PM

Thanks, nice job!

I'm working on this block now. I'm using a 2 1/2" center square and 1 1/4" side strips. My corner triangles are also 2 1/2" squares cut on the diagonal, rather than larger squares quartered as in your tute.
I have found it easier if I cut off the overlaps of the strips before I sew on corner triangles using the 45 degree lines on my ruler to keep the block square. Will send pics later.

Yes, pls. post pics as I have done 4 framing some 12" blocks and the corners are NOT all the same size or really good. I am a visual learner and can't seem to figure out how to do that part.

Here's my adaptaion of the block. It makes a 6 1/2" finished block with a 2 1/2" cut center and 1 1/4" cut side strips and corner triangles cut from 2 1/2" squares.

WOW!, these blocks look great. Thanks for the tute as well. I really would like to see the quilt you make with this.
