Okay, Marilyn, I did it. Just finished the block and decided to show you. When I first finished it, I thought, Gee I wonder why I don't like it as much as I like Marilyn's. Then I realized I had the fourth row in upside down. What a difference it made when I turned it around. Now I love it. I will put a couple of borders on it and it will look great hanging above my bed.

Thanks for the tutorial. It worked great. It didn't end up at 28" like I originally planned because I goofed when I cut the fabric, so it finished at 24, but that's okay. I like the size and think it will be just right when I get the borders on.

Hi Judy! I love it too!!! I think the Carpenter's Star is the most beautiful block there is. I am so glad that you posted the picture of it and that you love it too! Thank you!!!

Has anyone done the math to make this in a 40" square and added borders to make it about 50 x 50? If someone can figure out the size of the cut squares please let me know.
Debi

JudyG 05-14-2010 11:50 AM

To end up with a block that is 40" finished, the individual blocks would have to be 5 inches finished, 5-1/2 inches unfinished.

Using Marilyn's numbers, instead of 2" squares, you would need 5.5" squares. Instead of 2-3/8" squares, use 6" squares. To make the half square triangle blocks, I would start with 6" squares and trim them down after sewing the diagonal stitching. Then to make it 50x50, you would need to add 5" of borders. I would use one small border (say 1.5")and one larger border (say 3.5")

Debi S 05-14-2010 12:29 PM

Perfect! Just what I was looking for.

Judie 05-30-2010 08:05 PM

wow.. you guys, sorry GALS are so smart..(got in trouble for saying guys once) and you're talented too!

I love this block.. I saw it one other time and could not remember the name.. Thank you for showing them. The blocks are just beautiful..

It would be fun to see a large one block quilt, with a matching border of the smaller blocks.. now that could be a stunner!

Marilyn, you're daughter's quilt is just wonderful. I know she will treasure it the rest of her life. Thanks for the tute!

Hi, I am new to this site and to quilting. I love this pattern and a big thank you for posting it. I think even I will be able to follow this. One question tho, how long and how many times did it take to get this pattern drawn? I would love to be able to do that.

soffy 06-03-2010 10:00 AM

SO PRETTY!. THANKS!!!!

kclausing 06-03-2010 10:12 AM

I love homemade patterns, thanks!

sorry I'm new, so I have a possible stupid question... I assume when you sew the 2 squares together (to make the half square blacks), you sew 2 lines, one down each side of the marked line, then cut on the marked line, creating 2 half square blocks? correct?

I don't remember. Not too long though. I don't even remember if I made the pattern or the block first. Sorry!

Yes. And that's NOT a stupid question. I didn't even know about doing it that way until I'd been quilting probably 9 months. I would cut the squares in half and then have to sew on the diagonal. I'm glad that you know how to do it the faster and more accurate way. Good Luck! If you have any questions, just ask. I'd be happy to help you.

This is what it looks like with 6 in [finished] squares, a 1 in red border, and a 7 in outer border. About 64 in finished. I've made 3 so far. One is in my sewing room, the other 2 are in my girls rooms. Theirs are made with asian black and white prints

OH! That's pretty. So, it's just one giant block for a bed? if I understand you correctly? Very cool! How long does it take to make one that size?

kclausing 06-03-2010 11:00 AM

Love it! Think I'll try one this weekend.

cminor 06-03-2010 11:04 AM

I am all over this!!! I have my squares cut out - but being a bit daring - I am starting with 6 in squares, sewing down the middle, cutting in half and hoping for the best. . .now that I think about it - will my full squares be too big? Should those get cut down a little? I usually try to stick with nice round numbers since I still have a hard time measuring correctly. :)

Your HQT should start 1/2 in biggger, 3/4 to be on the safe side. Make the HST as usual, Then square them up to match the 61/2 in squares. So, for the HQT start with a 7in square.

It's a wall hanging. It's not long enough for a bed. You could design some thing to go on the top and bottom to make it long enough for a bed. I have another one cut out, and that's what I plan on doing with it. It will be for my neice.
Once it's cut out, you could peice it in one day.

Thats what I was afraid of. I have all the squares cut and some of the triangles done. Can I just cut down the squares that don't get made into triangles? I started with all 6 in unfininshed squares.

This math stuff is still so beyond me! Maybe my best option would be to square up my trianges, then make my squares of the background fabric 1/2 in smaller?

Or did I read that completly wrong. Should the background squares and all the HST be the same size?

At least by cutting the six inch squares for the HST, you are safe with the size of your full squares.
The formula for HST is: 7/8" to an inch larger than the size of the block you are trying to create.
You will have to trim, but at least you will have something you can trim <g> ...
Had you wanted to have 6 inch HST - - you would have cut squares that were 7 inches or 6 7/8", draw diagonal, sew on each side, cut on drawn line ...
Very clever of you, and you will find that you will learn a lot with your experimental mentality <wave> don't forget to share your results!
;)

Very pretty!

cminor 06-03-2010 11:22 AM

Ok I think I get it now. I do think I will want to square my HST to something nice and round. I think I am at about 5 3/4 now but I don't remember for sure. (That is what happens when your on the computer at work - and the pcs are at home!) Then I can cut my squares to match and be all set!

cminor is right. I don't do the math any more. I guess it's a case of I've been doing it so long, I just jump right in and do it with out thinking. Guess I type the same way. My pattern was in a magizine, I didn't have to do the math, some one did it for me. Never was good at it anyway!!

nwm50 06-03-2010 11:26 AM

itty bitty squares? I'll pass til i gain experience. But seriously you're sweet to post this for us. I'm going to bookmark this though for later. This is such a real purty pattern.

momymom 06-03-2010 11:42 AM

With the grid provided, you can start with any size square you want.

Sounds like you have it down. <wave>

Sorry if I got ypu confused. I don't always think things through. I guess you could say I'm a bit inpulsive. I did look up my pattern, and it did say 7 in squares for the HQT. The standard formula says to add 7/8 in. I guess I need to do a little review.

Hi momymom! I love your avatar. Is it from your garden? Beauuuu tii fullll

momymom 06-03-2010 05:53 PM

no, it's from my anniversary bouquet. My husband buys me one yellow rose [my favorite] for each year we've been married. This year will be 29. That rose was from 2 years ago. He couldn't find enough yellow, so it was a mix. I stood on a chair and took pictures. Then cropped and edited it. That's the end result. It's my wall paper too. He says he might have to go back to just a dozen, it's getting to expensive. Hard to find that many roses in one place too!!

It will be 44 for me! And, one rose says it all if it comes with chocolate!!!

Sugar free for me. He usually gets me the Godiva bars, when he can find them.

This looks like one I can try...I'm not afraid of 1/2 square triangles....and your tute is very easy to follow...this is coming from a "newbie"....thank-you for posting...

There's a Christmas version in this month's The Quilter mag. Even bigger blocks, 8 1/2 in cut size. It's really nice. Works up to a queen size when finished.
