Hi everybody! I got several requests for the pattern for my Carpenter's Star so I am here to post it for everyone to enjoy!
It's really quite a simple block to make, especially after you make the first one. Don't get me wrong though, I said simple, Not "Fast"! LOL I have made about 125 of these blocks so far. It took me all day when I first started. Now it takes me between 3 1/2 and 4 hours to make One. The pattern is made completely out of squares and half squares. If you have any questions, Please don't hesitate to ask! I'd be more than happy to help anybody. I hope this Homemade Pattern is written so that people can understand it. If not, let me know and I will make it clearer. NOTE: On the half square units, don't cut the squares into half squares until AFTER they are sewn. Mark your center line diagonally, sew together and then cut unit in two, to make 2 half square units. I hope that is what they are called anyways! Here's the pattern and Please post pictures of your first blocks and projects you make so I can see. I love pictures! Thanks for posting this. It is a beautiful pattern, and I have admired the quilts you have made with it.
|
Thank You so much for taking the time to make this great detail instruction.

You were asking about my avatar. It is basically the same shape as yours, but with the colors laid out differently. Mine is called Center Stage put out by Pieced Tree. Look them up on the Internet, they sell their patterns there. You will love how this pattern goes together. I have a feeling it will help you make your Carpenter's Star blocks much faster! :D

This is wonderful. I understood it just fine. I appreciate the visual aid too...sure makes my brain happy!
I can't wait to try this! |
Thanks for the pattern. At first glance it looks hard, but your pattern and directions simplify it! Your quilt and pillow were beautiful!

I was meant to find this post. I have a much larger finished size for the block. One big large block actually makes the quilt. I wanted to be able to make a smaller block first to see how my fabrics would go together. Thank you!
|
Wow! That is an awesome. I always wanted to do one giant block as a quilt and think this may be one that I could do it with!!! Thanks for the instructions.
|
absolutely beautiful!!!!!

This is very similar to the way quilterscache.com makes hers. Her block is a 24 inch though.

I realize it is not a giant block, however, I will possibly multiply everything for instance by 10 and I would get a 120 X 120 quilt using one carpenter's saw block. Do you think that would work? I saw Fons and Porter do that one time on a show and thought that was one way of making a complicated block super easy because you only have to complete one block and fairly fast too.

danmar,
Thanks for doing this. Love the colors, would make a nice baby quilt. I had been looking for this pattern. Found one on a the web site (thequiltedforest.com). Actually found two, one was named The Understudy and the other was named Center Stage. Center Stage finished size is 24" x 24" and the Understudy finished size is 16" x 16". These are Pieced Tree Patterns, they are called Tiny Ones, they they are laminated on a 3" x 5" card, with the picture on one side and the instructions on the back. Sell for $3 each. The Carpenters Star was what I was really looking for, so thanks again. |
Thank you for the pattern,
|
thank you for posting the pattern it is very pretty. Sure does take alot of small blocks to make such a gorgeous quilt block. I would love to see the whole quilt when it is finished.

I made my daughter one 100" x 114" in all colors. Here's a link to the post on it. It was beautiful!!! http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-38337-1.htm While I was finishing hers, I was commissioned to make one for a woman with a fabric store that didn't sew!!!! (Can you believe that? She does now and has taken up quilting, thanks to me.) :o) Here's a link to hers. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-38346-1.htm They are beautiful! Marilyn |
Both of the quilts are gorgeous. I will take a picture of the Lancaster Rose one I made some years ago.
|
Thanks Marilyn....that certainly looks simple enough!!! Thanks for sharing it!
|
Thank you so much for sharing your pattern instructions.

Like your directions, but with each square being 2" doesn't this finish to a 16" block rather than 12"?

No, I start with a 2" square or a 2" HQT (after sewing), so that makes them 1.5" after your 1/4" seams. It finishes at 12". Marilyn |
Thanks for the tute, Marilyn. I have admired your avatar since I joined this group. I think by enlarging the block, it would make a perfect wallhanging above my bed to go with the Storm at Sea quilt which is my avatar. If my math is correct, by starting with 4" blocks which would finish to 3.5", I would end up with a 28" block, which would be a great size for a wallhanging. Might have to move this to the top of my To Do list.

You are quite welcome. I like your avatar too. I think the two of them will go well together. I think the 4" blocks would work great to make your 28" wall hanging. Post pictures when you get it finished! I'd love to see it. Marilyn |
